Red
2015 Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts de Barville Domaine Barville France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
80 points
(non-blind - my wine)
Medium minus ruby.
Medium intensity nose. Slight raisinated cherry, ripe blackberry, hint of black pepper. Dusty and dry fruit.
Dry, 14.5% alcohol, medium plus acid, medium tannins (scratchy), quite bitter (medium plus bitterness).

Thin on the palate - lacks fruit ripeness, surprisingly for a 2015. Dilute given the $30+ price point.

from the producer: 14.5% alcohol, mix of 100-year-old vat and french oak casks.

Red
2012 Qupé Syrah USA, California, Central Coast
87 points
(blind)
Medium ruby color. Rich, ripe nose of slightly raisinated blackberry and hint of smoked ham.
Floral with some violets, slightly reductive smoked meat, hints of black pepper.
Ripe on the palate, maybe 1-2g RS, full-bodied, 15% (actually 13.5%) alcohol, medium plus acid (possibly acidified), medium tannins - plush, but also a bit bitter. No oak or neutral barrels.

This seems like a classic Aussie Shiraz. In the context of shiraz, this seems more floral / peachy, so I'm guessing this is McLaren Vale. Slightly mushroomy / integrated fruit suggests a few years of bottle age.

Final call: 2015 McLaren Vale Shiraz, $20. Good quality but not a powerful example.

Actually: 2012 Qupe Syrah, Central Coast.
Red
2014 Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
(blind)
Deep ruby-purple color. Ripe blackberry with strong smoked ham - reduction. Mocha - some new oak impact.
Slight RS - maybe 2-4g. 14.5% alcohol (correct), medium acid, medium tannins (plush), medium plus finish - dense and sweet with mocha notes (40% new French oak).

Well-integrated, higher-priced Aussie shiraz, $25. Much heftier and sweeter and texturally weightier than the Qupe.

2016 Barossa Shiraz

Actually 2014 Torbreck Woodcutter's shiraz
This is pretty restrained alcohol for Torbreck. A great value at $15-20, and a great example of how intense Aussie shiraz is.
