Introduction

Mostly reds from 2015, but with a single 2016, a 1990 from Haut-Bailly a lovely White and, of course, a Sauternes to finish things off.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2014 Château Carbonnieux Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Vibrant aromas, lime, grapefruit, crushed rocks, and flowers. extremely crisp on the palate, bracing and exciting.
Red
2016 Château d'arce France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
A bit shy, but with persistence reveals cherries, plums, and crushed gravel. Juicy, racy and voluptuous, putting red berries in the forefront. Drinking well already, possibly owing to the lack of wood aging and low tannins.
Red
2015 Château Cap Saint George France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Georges-St. Émilion
Sweet berry aromas, mostly cherry, with hints of blackcurrant and oak. Creamy texture, with mixed berry flavors and oak on the palate. Muscular finish suggests it's still a bit young and could use some time in cellar.
Red
2015 Château Bois-Malot France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur
Surprising, especially considering the price point and my experience of the 2010 vintage. Dominated by raspberry aromas, with secondary aromas of dark cherry, fresh grass and compost. Velvety texture with bold flavors of chocolate-covered cherries and raspberries. Boisterous and juicy. A little grippy in the finish, so I think 6-18 months in the cellar is probably advised, but it should drink well fairly young.

Red
2015 Château Fonréaud France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc
Lots of fruit on the nose, with a combination of stewed raspberries and cranberry. Also has hints of cedar and lava rocks. Satiny texture, bright red fruit on the palate. Structured, but lacking in complexity. Very approachable already.

Red
2015 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Le Petit France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Complexity on the nose: berry compote, cherries, toasted oak, herbs, and crushed rocks. Bold fruit on the palate, lovely integration and balance even at this early stage. A bit simple on the palate right now; a reasonable amount of time in the cellar will hopefully evolve complexity and depth on the palate to match the aromas!
Red
2015 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
One of the stars of the tasting. Primarily Merlot (84%) and Cab Franc (14%), with just a splash of Cab Sauv (2%). Slightly shy on the nose, but patience pays off as it reveals ripe cherries, cut grass, rose petals and chocolate. Vibrant on the palate, elegant and balanced, with enough oak to add depth and complexity. Still too young, especially in the finish, but this is one to buy, hold and bring out on a special occasion in 10+ years.

Red
2015 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Largely Merlot-based, from Pomerol. Deep and dark aromas of cherry, plums and hints of cedar. Racy on the palate, with loads of red fruit. Depth comes in the form of anise.

Red
1990 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Exquisite wine which must be at or near its peak. Blackcurrant and dark cherries, clay pot, dried herbs and a hint of petroleum. Perfectly balanced, deep and dark on the palate. Complex and layered, with earth and oak through the long finish. If you are lucky enough to have this lurking in your cellar, do yourself a favor and try one soon!
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Deep yellow-gold. Apricots, toffee, baking spices. Syrupy texture, very sweet and luscious, but supported by bright acids.

Red
2015 Château Labadie Médoc France, Bordeaux, Médoc
Blackberries, fresh-cut oak planks, and cherry blossoms. Lively red fruit on the palate, with a smoky finish. Still a bit grippy and young.
