Introduction

How do great Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs express themselves on terroirs from Burgundy and Oregon?
Retracing the adventure that led some great Burgundy winemakers to produce on both sides of the ocean.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Durant Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
89 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of citrus lime, lemon, earthy minerals, acacia flowers with more air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.6%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, white peach, stony minerality, earth. Zippy tingly long acidic finish.
Going for a restrained style - hardly any oak signature felt at all, and the fruit even seems a little green at the edges.
Surprsingly this is aged for 21 months in 100% French oak, of which 50% is new oak.
This is a selection of the best barrels from the Lark Block, which is a lower elevation site with volcanic Jory soils in the Dundee Hills AVA.

2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour going onto to a bit yellow gold. Legs.
Nose medium intensity, with aromas of moist earth, herbs, light citrus lemon, light toast, briny minerality, slight matchstick. Developing. Opens up more with an hour of air in glass.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of rich honeyed lemon curd, light toast, moist earth, rocky stones minerality, touch of salty brine. Lovely long finish.
Very good quality. Very balanced on the palate. Richness with restraint, something that the non-Burgandians aspire towards.
Years of good ageing ahead, if one can avoid the curse of premox.
Red
2014 Domaine Nicolas-Jay Pinot Noir Bishop Creek USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
91 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of raspberries, bright red cherries, stony minerality, sweet spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of raspberries, sweet ripe red cherries, stony minerality, sweet baking spices, slight smoke. Long finish.
Very good quality. Nice fresh primary fruits packaged in an elegant body. Some darker red fruit within that is not showing at this point yet. A few more years of bottle age should see this develop well. New World, but not obviously so.
Collaboration between Jean-Nicolas Meo of Meo Camuzet and Jay Boberg.
Aged 15 months in 50% new French oak.
First vintage produced by Nicolas-Jay from this supposedly famed vineyard site with old vines, located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in the northern Willamette Valley.
Red
2011 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
88 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour turning garnet at the rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries and light earth. Some light red floral perfume with more air.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), medium- tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherry fruit, light earth. Medium+ finish.
Really tight and closed up. Silky texture yet has a somewhat raw character. Providing little enjoyment at this stage. A grinchy score from me. Try this again in 5 years.
Red
2014 Bergström Pinot Noir Winery Block USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains
90 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of rocky stones, bits of herbs, red cherry fruits, flitting metallic minerality. Light and mysterious. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.2%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of concentrated ripe red cherries and crunchy rocky stones that almost seem to be vibrating with a life of their own. Long finish.
Very intriguing wine. Nose is so light and suggests something lithe, but the palate is packed with lots of concentrated savoury ripe substance. This calls for further age to develop and reveal more of its true character. Maybe another 3-4 years.
Limited cuvée that is made from the smallest block at the estate vineyard.

Red
2014 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
94 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sweet spices, bright red cherries almost a bit candy-like with more air. Developing.
On the palate is where this Pinot starts to strut its stuff. Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.4%), fine smooth medium+ tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of exuberant macerated bright red cherries, ripe strawberries, lovely sweet baking spices, white pepper. Long finish.
Very good quality. Lip-smacking tasty layered fruits and very good mouth-feel. Balanced New World Oregon not trying to be Burgandian. Yes I have concluded that a Pinot Noir should express its own character and not aim to just be another Burgandian pretender.
Will develop nicely over the next 4-5 years and could become more complex also.

2008 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet edge. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of mint, earth, sour red cherries, metallic minerality. Developing.
On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of mint, earth, moderately dense but tart sour red cherries. Tart long finish.
Nice for a Burgundy if you like your acidities on the high side. Enjoyment factor otherwise lacking. Cross your fingers and hope this comes round and improves with further age.
Rather complex and the acid freak in me is partial to this, hence my score. But nope I wouldn't have been able to pin this down as Grand Cru level let alone Clos Vougeot if tasted blind.
Red
2012 Trisaetum Pinot Noir Family Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
92 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of herbal bush, earth, strawberries, red cherries. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.3%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet strawberries, sweet red cherries, earth, sweet herbs. Long finish.
Very good quality. Complex, integrated and enjoyable. Being picky, just lacking the acidic lift for me. No need for further ageing.
Spends 22 months in barrel, two new and two neutral.
A combination of Trisaetum’s three estate vineyards - Ribbon Ridge Estate (Ribbon Ridge AVA), Coast Range Estate (Yamhill-Carlton AVA), Wichmann Dundee Estate (Dundee Hills AVA).
Red
2015 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Louise USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
92 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of burnt rubber, smoke, sweet red cherries. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.1%), grippy medium+ almost high tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, ripe strawberries, sweet baking spices, smoke, hot stones mineralirty. Very structured. Grippy long finish.
Very good quality. Brimming with energy. Built for the long haul. Almost painfully young to drink now. Needs another 5+ years to integrate.
Destemmed. Aged for 15 months in 20% new French oak.
Loiuse is Veronique Drouhin's blend of a selection of a few of her favorite barrels.

2012 Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
95 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of barnyardy earth, leathery meat, sous bois, sour red cherries, ripe red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), soft medium tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury earth, sous bois, leathery meat, crunchy ripe red cherries, crushed stones minerality. Very long finish.
Wow very good quality. I guess it's about a 94 pointer for most, but the Burg fan in me pushes it to 1 point higher. Really savoury, yet elegant and soft. Complex elements melding together. Intellectual stimulation + enjoyment.
Probably had the benefit of lots of air already since it was the final wine of the tasting. Start of a long drinking window.
