Introduction

thought I'd go and look at some new arrivals and assess the readiness to drink of some other bottles that were looking provocative in the storage

Flight 1 - Bracket one - readiness to drink (6 notes)

One victim identified...

Red
2009 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
From Coravin. Perfumed and spiced red berry (raspberry) fruit underpinned by a little undergrowth and ream On the palate it's wetly fleshy with slightly jubey raspberry, a little talc textured burr and finishes savoury. Nice. Pleasant now in a primary way but can keep...
Red
1999 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
From Coravin. Masses of black fruit, spice, vanilla with some leather and lay under this In the mouth it's positively porty but still juicy and vigorous. Tannins are drying but not overtly course. This is not as rambunctious as I remember it but still rather yummy. Drink now with a decant and some red meat
Red
2014 Te Mata Estate Coleraine New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
From Coravin. Ripe wild blackcurrant, cedar, slight pencil shavings and cigar box, a little cream and sweet spice. Savoury, refreshingly juicy, similar flavour profile to the nose, tannins are present without being overbearing, great component balance lends a wonderful sense of 'completeness'. Eminently approachable now but with great promise. bravo.

Red
2010 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Cedar, sweet spice, biscuit, blackcurrant and a little plum. More of the same on the palate but more savoury and dense, drying, floury textured tannins close down the palate a bit though the flavours persist long. Lovely but still young. Time.

Red
2004 Vasse Felix Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
From Magnum and Coravin. Pencil shavings, eucalyptus, jubey black and red berry and blackcurrant, cream and vanilla, a little nutmeg and clove. On the palate its' dense , an initial impression of sweet berry fruit married to savoury ,meaty, grippy tannins that dry out the mid palate. Fruit persists and I'd age that this is still a bit of a puppy. Time for me.
Red
2003 Vasse Felix Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
From Magnum and Coravin. meaty savoury and far more gamey than the 2004 with notes of beef and yeast extract and a little cheesy and vegetal stink to the nose. With extreme agitation it does show a little ripe red fruit beneath this. ON the palate it's a bit wet and flat, the fruit is more red currant, muted and a little sour and the tannins are tight and grippy. Hmm. This might need to be consumed with a traditional Thanksgiving lunch this year!

Flight 2 - Bracket two - new arrivals (4 notes)

The Bowen Estate has inspired me to do one bracket of mixed 96 for my medoc tasting - 3 x Bordeaux 3 x Australian...

Red
2011 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
From Coravin. Toast, cedar, red berry, slight blackberry, a little coffee and sweet spice. More of the same on the palate, very primary still rather lovely. I suspect this will go longer if required.
Red
2001 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
From Coravin. A little gamey, some ripe baked red berries and baked earthy, a little oxidation and sweet spice. In the mouth it's rich, savoury with ripe red berried fruit and quite peppery spice, slightly chalky tannins. Big but rather yum.
Red
1996 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
From Coravin. Savoury, meaty, gamey, a little horse flesh, leather and earthy over sweetly spiced though muted red fruits. In the mouth it has some plain chocolate and coffee joining slight volatile acidity, red currant, spice and near resolved tannins. Nice but drink up.
Red
2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
FronCoravin. Ripe blackberry, plum and blackcurrant, a little cedar, sweet spice, and biscuit. Savoury and surprisingly dense in the mouth, broad and quite velvety tannins on the mid palate. Still very primary and quite alcoholically warm…defo a reflection of the vintage in the latter case - lots of time required for me...

Closing

What a lovely treat…good to try some wines that I was curious about. The approachability of the Te Mata was a surprise considering it's relative youth.
