White
2002 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Corked. Saturated cork, some old seepage under capsule. No sign of oxidation.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
Medium onion skin color, with flashes of pale watermelon. Oxidative nose of very ripe apple and baking bread, showing a savory, almost roasted quality. Lots of subtle complexity on the palate. As usual with Krug, an intellectually interesting wine, though not my preferred style. Not scored.

Rosé - Sparkling
1996 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé P2 France, Champagne
Identical color to the Krug NV, medium onion skin with flashes of watermelon. Massive volume of fine bubbles. Very chalky throughout, with red fruits and a brightness and energy that couldn't contrast more with the Krug. Exceptionally long. A touch of bitterness and annoying, persistent heat spoil the experience a bit. Not scored.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
1989 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Deep ruby red, very youthful in the glass. Prominent green pepper aroma blew off completely with several hours in the open bottle, giving way to waves of intense red fruit, then rose petal, then tea leaf, then sweet oak and tobacco. Weightless power on the palate reveals the pedigree. Ready to drink right now. Beautiful wine. A second bottle, with signs of old seepage, was generally similar but had a slightly bitter edge.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1945 Sandeman Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
Purchased and imported directly from the UK. Base neck, nice branded cork, beautiful brown glass bottle, Oporto bottled. This was light in color but showed rich, fresh, generous notes of sweet strawberry alternating with tart cranberry. Lovely aged complexity with maple syrup, nuts, chocolate and root beer. A bit of spirit poked through, especially on the nose, but this was a very fine showing.
