Introduction

Weekend away with friends at the beach before New Years. No order to the drinks, just a chance to try a bunch of stuff from the cellar.

Flight 1 - Friday (3 notes)

Beer
2015 Jolly Pumpkin Luciérnaga "The Firefly" USA, Michigan
Nice and refreshing but the differentiating qualities have departed.
Red
1980 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Took a while for the foot funk to blow off (3+ hours in a decanter) replaced by a spicy black pepper mix. Body is a little thin but still get the lingering spice, light berry flavor and crisp acid finish. Maybe not to the level of the last bottle but a nice little bottle to pull out demonstrate some less heralded older Bordeaux to ‘newbie’ friends.
Beer
2018 Troëgs Brewing Company The Mad Elf USA, Pennsylvania
This one didn’t seem to be quite as thick or sickly sweet as others but you still get both. The high level of alcohol is really sneaky.

Flight 2 - Saturday (2 notes)

Beer
2015 Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura USA, Michigan
Carbon copy of the last bottle: Impenetrable black coloring, nice foamy head. Some subtle smoky malt flavor and the typical Jolly Pumpkin sour. Much lighter and thinner than expected. A little disappointing that, aside from the coloring, this didn't differentiate itself more from, say, the standard Bam. Still a nice beer and, as with others, would work well as a palate cleanser in small doses.
Red
1983 Château Malartic-Lagravière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Fantastic red purple color with very little browning. A funk that reduced with decanting and an awesome wild strawberry smell. Great flavor profile of mild red fruit, cinnamon, ginger and leather. Very nice. Texture is a little oily.
