David Arthur dinner w/David Long

Four Seasons restaurant in NYC

Tasted March 27, 2019 by MC2 Wines with 140 views

Introduction

This is one of the first Napa wineries that we visited back in the day and have continued to appreciate the wines over the years. We were the 'first timers' at the dinner - many folks go to this event every year and it seemed like a nice crowd.

Flight 1 - Cocktail (1 note)

Rose and some passed apps (pigs in a blanket, foie, etc.)

Rosé
2018 David Arthur Annalyce Rosé USA, California, Napa Valley
Lots of darker red fruits. It has that dusty almost stone style overhang with the fruit. A bit more on the darker side (I think that makes sense since I think this is a CS grape). Very dry and easy to drink. Enjoyable.

Flight 2 - First Course (0 notes)

Scallop slivers, almond milk, caviar

This was served with the Napa Valley Chardonnay 2016 although as I'm not a chard drinker I skipped. It sounds like they've done some good things with the wine though - paring back the amount of new oak, reducing the fining/filtering to keep more flavor.

Flight 3 - Second Course (1 note)

Rocchetti, Wild Boar Ragout

Red
2015 David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon Three Acre USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
This is young and still a bit in the disjointed phase. The oak and vanilla more pre-dominant. The fruit more muted although there's definitely some blueberry and similar. Would be interesting to come back to in maybe 5 or so years.

Flight 4 - Third Course (1 note)

Four Seasons Farmhouse Duck, red wine cherry sauce

Red
2015 David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1147 USA, California, Napa Valley
I really enjoyed this. Overall just singing. While the Three Acre was a bit wobbly still this was very well put together and balanced. It's definitely on the young side and for my taste I wouldn't be drinking it for at least 10 and prob more like 15-20 years. Lots of more darker fruits (think blackberry). A bit on the riper side but not overdone. It's definitely Napa and prob more in the modern style, but quite enjoyable.

Flight 5 - Dessert (1 note)

Coffee/Chocolate layer cake

Petit Fours & Cotton Candy

White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 David Arthur Sauvignon Blanc Brielle USA, California, Sonoma County
The D'Yquem project. First year of this wine. Grapes were harvested on Dec 1st so quite late and after they'd had time to truly shrink. I love D'Yquem as much as the next person, but I also appreciated some of the differences in this one. It's lighter and a bit less full bodied. The kindof wine that works really nicely as an after dinner sipper when you've had a big meal with bigger reds. Very crisp and light. Sweet for sure, but almost more of a demi-sec where it doesn't feel like a full blown sweet wine. Some honeydew and apricot notes. Quite enjoyable.

The Elevation 1147 is a cut above and really quite nice. Also fun to try the new dessert project.
