2019 Athens Wine Event

Athens

Tasted June 28, 2019 by Papies with 275 views

Introduction

Annual gathering of friends in Athens with the sole aim of great wines.
This year there was an impromptu Assyrtiko top end Cuvee tasting at the excellent Oinoscent Wine Bar in Athens too!

Flight 1 - Assyrtiko Top End Cuvees @ Oinoscent, Athens! (7 notes)

Impromptu but still great! A great set of wines are now in full swing and these could well challenge the great whites of the world.

2017 Vassaltis Gramina Cuvée des Vignerons Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
93 points
By the glass via Coravin at Oinoscent, Athens.
This could well develop into the Clos St Hune of Santorini and goes along the same path as Terlan did with its Grand Cuvee. Make a superb wine from the best one has and not try to push it but let it sing.
Focused , mineral and laser like precise. 10 months or so on lees and nothing else, no feel of any oak. Polished on the acid even at this young age and really special. Less giving at this stage than its brother "Plethora" ( Papies 93) and definitely less of intervention than Hatzidakis Assyrtiko de louros ( Papies 93) but wit age this should develop into further greatness. 93 for now but watch this stage

Blind we would have guessed this was Hatsidakis Assyrtiko de Louros ( Papies 93) which we actually had a bit later and to us that is as good as a compliment we could have given it. A superb and giving wine, less focused than its older brother the Gramina ( Papie 93) but definitely n the money now. Slight oxidative, light rich honey touch lingers along with a solid level of acid and mineralityl. Less of a saline Assyrtiko but superb at this stage and with lots of life. We would prefer this (much like Assyrtiko de louros) younger than older when the freshness is still there.

2017 T-Oinos Assyrtiko Clos Stegasta Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Tinos
92 points
Young and just about kicking to its step but still very good.
Linear, mineraland polished assyrtiko and albeit not from Santorini still at par with the top end of Santorini Assyrtikos. Less saline but still impressively elegant and polished. Classy. 92 now but with lots of potential given some further age.

2017 Argyros Assyrtiko Cuvée Monsignori Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
91 points
A special cuvee made of the oldest and most precious wines of the the estate.
Very elegant santorini assyrtiko, young and needs time to develop a bit more of a giving side but this is a really pretty and high quality wine. Quite a bit of a saline, mineral feel would have expected a bit more focus but still very good. A bit of an in between style of top end assyrtiko and sits square between the really focused linear ones and the fattier more giving style of lets say Assyrtiko de louros style wines. Solid 91 and with lots of promise.

2017 Hatzidakis Winery Assyrtiko Nykteri Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
91 points
We like the fattier a bit richer style of this assyrtiko , rounder, very giving and generous. And much like many of the style we prefer them younger when the freshness is at the maximum as it provides a lovely balance and energy. This is very good at this stage and should continue to develop for a few more but to us this is the time to have it. 91

2016 Hatzidakis Winery Assyrtiko de Louros Vignes Centenaires Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
94 points
For us the most special of all grand cuvees of Assyrtiko of Santorini.
Richer, waxier, dense from the 100+ yrs of age of the vines, light honey touch and a nice oaky dynamic too. And much like rhone whites of the high end we love this wine young and with freshness and really this now is singing and the fresh and vibrant side is in balance with the richer and denser profile of the wine. Superb and drink a few of these if you have them younger than older. 94

2016 Acroterra Skafida Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
92 points
A year since we tried this first ( Papies 91) and definitely this continues on the right path. Framed against 6-7 other top end assyrtikos this showed the quality of wine making here and a shame this project is not around yet. Waxier expression, richer, polished and with lots of depth of flavor. 92

Flight 2 - The Main Event! Spondi, Athens - http://www.spondi.gr/spondi/ (9 notes)

White
1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
flawed
Dark in color and from that we knew it was gone. Roussanne needs to be bright and glossy.
Oxidative, lacked freshness and was in a way gone. Frankly all these wines need to be , for us, drank young and fresh and bright. We have heard the story that they come back later in their life but we have never experienced it and we think its a trick to sell old stock. Same for all white Rhone wines.

2009 Gaja Langhe Chardonnay Gaia & Rey Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
90 points
The nose is very much stereotypical Italian white shy and a smell of nothing. Maybe a touch of floral edge but that's about it. Expected an oaky dynamic but none was present.
Elegant and polished on the palate but lacked excitement and depth. We argued if it was young and needed more age in bottle but we did not conclude. For sure the wine still has life in it. Showing glimpses of beauty. 90

1996 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
91 points
Our fifth experience with this vintage and probably the most muted ( 93 last year).
Took it some time to develop and did show touches of an oxiditave side. Not sure if this a bottle issue (we did fly it to Athens ) or just the wine on its last legs but we will look fwd to our other bottles for hopefully better rewards. Light floral, soft honey touch too. Very pretty just not at par with earlier experiences

1998 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
8 years since we tried this first ( Papies 92) and the vintage that launched our fascination and love affair of these magnificent wines. To us the best white wines in Italy and maybe the world.
But the trip to Athens did not do this wine any help and it did not perform or maybe the wine is on its last legs. We have quite a few more and this we live in hope! No rating this time round

2004 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
94 points
2004 Super Tuscan side by side blind ( Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia)
We guessed this was Sassicaia, the most elegant of all, developed lovely secondary side and superbly elegant. Also along with the Solaia the more at the money now.
Nice balance, soft herb side, good dark fruit, well evolved with forest floor touches . Dare we say this needs to be drunk sooner than later. A touch short on the finish and also along the way sort of tailed off. Still a solid 93-94 from us and a Joy

2004 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
2004 Super Tuscan side by side blind ( Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia)
We guessed this was Ornellaia.
Along with Sassicaia the most evolved and actually felt similar albeit Sassicaia was a small notch above ( Papies 94). Well secondary and good evolved dark fruit, soft earthy side. Elegant and in balance, maybe lacking a bit more depth than the other 3 but a superb wine nonetheless. 93

2004 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
94 points
2004 Super Tuscan side by side blind ( Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia)
We guessed this was the Solaia as it was the most distinct that the others.
Well evolved a lot softer than we would have expected and definitely with a lot less weight on the fruit than the Ornellaia (we guess the Ornellaia was the Masseto actually thinking the Masseto would be a heavier wine). Very elegant, surprisingly secondary for a 2004, well evolved on the fruit and with soft touches red fruits along witht he darker richer core. Really surprisingly approachable and giving at this stage given wine making and vintage and very happy to have crossed paths with it. Maybe one to drink sooner than later. 94

2004 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
92 points
2004 Super Tuscan side by side blind ( Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia)
We guessed this was the Masseto as it had the most density of all.
The lowest of the 4 in our view and also the one that felt the youngest and "less approachable" and this could use more time to develop. This was the closet to what we imagined the 2004 would have produced in Bolgheri , with a rich dark fruit core, still very much on the fruit and in need for more evolution. 92 for now but definitely could benefit with more time.

2005 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Nahe
92 points
From half bottle. Came at the end of a superb and long wine flight so this wine was at a disadvantage.
But its effortless beauty shown though and the polished core of acidity was right on the money to shine through the behemoths of 2004 Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto & Solaia.
Bright and energetic, soft petrolly side, soft honey touches. Solid 92
