Introduction

In the last decade Deovlet Winery has earned a reputation for high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool climate vineyards of Santa Barbara County and Santa Rita Hills in particular. The wines have both sensual and cerebral appeal and show the deft hand of winemaker Ryan Deovlet and his assistant Grace Kegel. The use of whole clusters and new oak is not dogmatically avoided. Rather, freshness, proportion, and grace are priorities. New oak and whole clusters seem subordinated to those goals. The Chardonnays are medium weight, aromatically appealing, and have Burgundian palates with lovely textures, subtle oak, and clean minerals. The Pinot Noirs honestly reflect their Santa Rita vineyard sites, ranging from open and fruit forward (Zotovich) to polished and elegant (Sanford and Benedict) to wild, complicated, and savory (La Encantada). These are wines that seem to be designed to age gracefully.

Flight 1 - Chardonnay (2 notes)

White
2016 Deovlet Chardonnay Zotovich Family Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
90 points
Zotovich is in a riper area of the Santa Rita Hills, but still cooler than most other California coastal Chardonnay growing areas. This Chardonnay has lively bright notes of lemon and pear with a dash of subtle oak, light menthol, and a clean tart, mineral finish. No blousy apple pie here. 90-91
White
2015 Deovlet Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
91 points
A vineyard planted in 1971. Has more heft than the Zotovich, with more color, aromatic citrus tang, and body. In the mouth a saline sweetness and fresh finish. 91-93

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2016 Deovlet Pinot Noir Zotovich Family Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
91 points
Great nose -- fleshy aromas of Griottes, dark cherry, cranberry, with a supple and savory mid palate. The finish is friendly but not long. Still a wine that invites a contemplative session. 91-92
Red
2016 Deovlet Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
More Burgundian than Zotovich. Reminded of a ripe Gevrey Chambertin. Generous nose of red and black fruits, pomegranate, cherry, cola, sassafras. The palate has heft without weight and an elegant finish. 30% whole clusters and one feels the structure. 92-94

Red
2016 Deovlet Pinot Noir La Encantada Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
93 points
The most savory Pinot Noir in the Deovlet line up in keeping with the cool location of the vineyard, La Encantada. The finish is complex, long, fresh and beguiling. Should age well. 93.

2016 Deovlet Pinot Noir USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

The Santa Barbara County PN is a blend of all three vineyards -- Zotovich, Sanford and Benedict, and La Encantada. It brings the virtues of all three together, with a lovely welcoming aroma from Zotovich, the racy bright middle palate of S & B, and the gamey savory finish of La Encantada. It is the equal of all three, maybe plus something more. A fabulous value!! 92-93
Red
2015 Deovlet Sonny Boy USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
90 points
78% Merlot and 22 % Cabernet sauvignon. Rich plummy chocolate on the nose and a fairly deep palate makes for a delicious and sensual California style Bordeaux.
