Flight 2 - 2012/2016 Pair (2 notes)

Red
2016 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Medium ruby. Juicy red fruit. Violets. Youthful. High acidity. Med- tannins. Sweet core of fruit. Good length. Opens up nicely in the glass but needs 10+ to really show its best.
Red
2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Medium garnet. Cherries, wild strawberries, vanilla, smoke, clove, forest floor. High fresh acidity, med+ fine chalky tannins. Medium+ body. Pronounced concentration, however unbalanced with the wood dominating at this stage. Developing some tertiary complexity.

Flight 3 - Gevrey-Chambertin (2 notes)

Red
2013 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Medium ruby, garnet at rim. Sweet crisp red fruit, menthol, pepper, smoke, liquorice. Developing. Fresh acidity, medium tannins, long finish. Green notes typical of the vintage evident on the palate. Pure, long length, great potential to age. Lovely wine in a cooler vintage style. 100% destemmed, 20% new oak.
Red
2006 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Medium garnet, bricking to rim. Vanilla, smoke, clove, caramel, forest floor, liquorice, spice, dried cherry, tea leaves. Fully developed. High acidity, med+ alcohol, medium tannins. Med+ finish. Decent, satisfying but not special. Drink in next 3-4 years.

Red
2012 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Medium garnet. Red fruit core, oak more evident with air. Tight, mineral, cheery, plum, floral. Med+ acidity, med- tannins, developing some tertiary notes. Long finish. Fine 1er cru. Outstanding. Has a long life ahead of it - 5-15 years. 30% new barrels, 50% destemmed. Monopole.
Red
2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Medium garnet but still ruby core - very youthful. Sweet red fruit core, oak notes. long finish. Herbal note. Firm tannins, pronounced crisp acidity, long finish. Ideally needs more time.

Meursault vines (northern end), lots of clay, pommard-like. 1/3 new oak. High proportion of whole bunch.

Flight 5 - Chambertin Grand Cru (1 note)

Red
2010 Camille Giroud Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Very closed note, very young for a Grand Cru. Red and dark fruit, black cherries, toast, sweet strawberries, delicately spiced. Real depth of flavour, long finish. High acidity. Delicate, fine, beautifully textured, scented. Length goes on and on. Classically refined Grand Cru but needs a lot more time - probably another decade.

Closing

Very enjoyable tasting, although nothing really blew me away. Typical wines of the vintages and communes. A pleasure to spend time tasting with Michael Schuster and hearing his comments on the wines and the vintages.
