WTDS at Meritage

Meritage, St. Paul

Introduction

What perfect opportunity to hit Meritage with no corkage Sundays through January. That's a great way to ease on through the winter. Six of us made our way to St. Paul for some fantastic wines and well prepared dishes from one of my favorite local chefs - Russell Klein. Way fun night!

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grande Réserve France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Very nice purity and focus, crisp, with pear and ginger snaps, lightly toasted on the palate. Always well done and a go to N/V for me. 91+pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Marie Courtin Champagne Resonance Extra Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. 100% PN, Disgorged 5/19, all 2015 fruit. This was a little floral on the nose with distinct light strawberry fruits both on the nose and palate, oyster shells, very nice minerality, apple, medium full bodied, apple peel, tart and fresh with good density. Doesn't come off angular or stark. Very good. 91+pts.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2005 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
flawed
Sadly this was corked. You tell this was outstanding, but then....
White
2015 Sebastien Dampt Chablis 1er Cru Les Beugnons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Very light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. This had a lovely nose, very bright, saline, and nice earthiness, great brine, white apple and brisk minerality. The vintage shows nicely as round and ripe, in a good way with still good acid; drinking quite well already. Excellent with our Blue Pools.

White
2009 Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
94 points
Light-medium gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. This was spot on with a brilliant mix of age and complexity along with bright acid and freshness. Wow, explosive nose, honey, melon, white fowers, lemon, stone. The palate is full bodied, lemon oil texture, creamy, creme brulee, almond paste, very long. This has immense depth and power, but it is so deft and energetic. This is grand cru level all the way. I'm kicking myself for not getting more of these.

Red
2008 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
92 points
Medium ruby red color. This had gotten some air and a quick decant; same bottle as Chablis28. Lovely nose, earthy with pretty red berries, bright raspberry, floral with rose hips. The palate is medium bodied, red fruits, polished with lovely texture and fine spices.
Man these are a joy to drink 92+pts.
Red
2010 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
94 points
Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Wow, this was as equally impressive as the last bottle almost five years ago. Gorgeous nose, blissful red berries with such purity and definition, ripe strawberry, savory with forest floor and Nuits spices. The palate is medium bodied, wild strawberry, tart raspberry, cinnamon, complex and refined spices, lightly savory, silky texture with fine tannins and a great finish. This hasn't lost a beat and shows why this vintage is so impressive. Great stuff.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
94 points
Very dark red/purple color. This had gotten about an 8 hour decant by the time we got to it. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Nice dark fruits, blackberry, cassis, full bodied, very savory, dried wood, leather, olive, tar. The palate adds in more red fruit with the pretty dark fruits. This was in a great place.
Red
2009 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over an hour. Dark and full bodied, blackberry, a little green, woodsy in a good way, mineral, pencil, pepper, youthful, needs 3 years. 91(+)pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
96 points
Medium plus gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. It's been a couple years since having this and it has moved a bit further along. This is a lovely d'Yquem that has remarkable freshness and grace. White peach, ripe pear, spices, brandied orange peel, orange creme brulee, peach, honey, slightly tropical with an impeccable balance of texture, acid and sweetness. There's always that lift and elegance that stands out with d'Yquem too. Loved it - thanks to Siggy for sharing this - #drinkmored'Yquem.
