'14 Napa Cab Friday Night Coravin Tasting

Tasted March 6, 2020 by DrBad with 141 views

Introduction

Friday night fun decided to Coravin a half a glass or so from some top '14 Napa Cabernets producers that we'll be visiting this summer and let air in the glass for about an hour. Four very different wines from the same Napa vintage. The aromas set these wines off from the start, we were both able to blind identify the wines from the aromas only. Very surprised by the outcome with the Anderson's Reserve jumping out to the lead with it's well integrated and round tannins and pulling away at the end with it's tasting, 20-30 second long finish. I thought the Crane would put the others to shame and expected the Seavey to be a close second.

Dark fruit and smoke aromas with blueberry, blackberry, cassis flavors giving this a soft, round fruit driven profile. Very nice and drinkable but lacking a bit in structure to push it a little higher. Edged out for 2nd by the B Cellars St Helena which had a lot of character with a long mineral driven finish.

Some earthiness and iodine aromas with a bit of saline as it opened up. Blackcurrant and tart cherry with a short finish. Not a lot going on with this wine and with the lack of structure not sure how much it will improve. A bit disappointing. The body seemed to fade from this as time went on so maybe this would have been better earlier on right from the pour.

2014 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley

The wine of the night out of a pretty decent lineup. Dark fruit and underbrush aromas. Big, sweet, mouth coating tannins. Plum, dark cherry, licorice and a long tannin and acid driven 30 second finish. A thoroughly enjoyable wine with lots of moving parts that come together near perfectly. This one led the whole way from start to finish, pulling away by a few lengths at the end with its long finish. Popped the cork a couple of nights later and it was even better, more pronounced dark fruits leading the way.

Distinct aromas set this apart from the other Cabs in the tasting. Strong saline and pollen with some barnyard funk developing over time. Easily identifiable from the other Cabs just by its aroma. The taste was much different from the nose with a good mix of grainy tannins, minerality and a medium long acidic finish. My number two, Christine's number three, she preferred the more round and fruity Myriad Dr Crane. Both picked the Anderson's CVV Reserve in the number one spot.
