Blind White Burgundy

Introduction

Rombauer was thrown in as a rube, and it ended up being wine of the night.

The blind lineup for this tasting was:
- 2011 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
- 2016 Louis Jadot (Duc de Magenta) Chassagne-Montrachet "Morgeot - Clos de la Chapelle"
- 2014 Xavier Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2012 Vincent Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon
- 1990 Fabien Coche-Bouillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres
- 2018 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros
- 2013 St Innocent Shea Pinot Noir (Bonus Red)

This wine, initially seemed quite mineral driven with some nice richness and oak as well. I think this wine will be better in a year or 2. This wine was not in mine or the group's top 3.

This wine was thrown in as the rube of the bunch. This wine was very upsetting to the 5 of us, because it garnered 3 first places, including mine, and was wine of the night by the group. Again, this was single blind. I don't know if this wine stood out for being different, or some other factor. For myself, I loved the acidity, it had gorgeous golden yellow fruit and the palate was explosive compared to the other bottles. Wines typically lose points when they're tasted blind, and I'm scoring this bottle significantly higher than I've ever scored a Rombauer chardonnay. I'm also going to buy more.

This wine is steely and crisp, quite mineral driven with some light butterscotch. It is slightly briny, definitely tastes like chablis. This was my wine #2 and the groups #2 wine. I am scoring this the same as the Rombauer more to make myself feel better, because I ranked the Rombauer #1 (oops).

For this wine, the distinct matchstick smell made me think it was a white burgundy. There's also white flowers and green apple. This was not in the group's or my top 3.

This wine was the most distinct in that there was significant oxidation. I am marking it flawed because I don't want to negatively score it, but it'd be in the 87 range the way it was drinking. The reason is that beyond the oxidation there was a pleasant caramelly profile and some biting acidity that really stood out. I would have happily consumed this at home by myself, but in this tasting it was definitely the laggard.

This wine was clearly Chablis, as it had a steely character and a briny mouthfeel and taste. The smell of crushed seashells is evident on the nose. There is also green apple and a bit of sulfur. My #3 wine of the night.

I threw this in because these wines were being poured into 5 jars, sealed, and consumed 2-3 hours later. I thought that would give this wine sufficent air exposure. It didn't. I still found this wine to be a bit tannic and not really ready for prime time yet. Blind, everyone got this as pinot noir but it took many questions to narrow it down.
