Introduction

Tonights tasting was themed - Woodlands wines, an old favourite of mine...

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2018 Woodlands Chardonnay Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Struck match, peachy fruit is almost crunchy but there is also a touch of tropical fruit here - mango and pineapple. Toast and butter complete the aromas on a quite boisterous nose. In the mouth it's quite rich as well; the palate is a reflection of the nose, the acid is, perhaps, a little soft and the alcohol a touch high but this is charming in a blousy way...
White
2018 Woodlands Chardonnay Woodlands Brook Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Struck match, perfumed floral notes but also plenty of toasted cedar, peach again and a little apricot. The acidity is a little soft and the fruit drops a little quickly. not as good, for me, as the entry level chardonnay. Hmm.
Red
2017 Woodlands Cabernet Franc Merlot Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Jubey and sweet red berries; a little raspberry and plum, very pretty fruit notes with a tiny herbaceous underpin here as well that lends interest to the nose. In the mouth it's got juicy acidity and is very fruit forwrad; there is breadth and texture here without overt tannic grip, the alcohol warmth is non-intrusive. This falls very much in the eminently smashable space.
Red
2016 Woodlands Clementine Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Creamy blackcurrant tends to the jammy, there is a touch of pyrazine here and a chalky, almost saline quality. Some cedar. With time a little plum, chocolate and red berry joins the other aromas. Juicy acidity is mouth watering, flavours of blackcurrant, plum and chocolate as well as cedar and a little herbaceous note. Silky, drying tannins. It's a little out of whack for me. Probably needs time.
Red
2016 Woodlands Margaret Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Crunchy blackcurrant, cedar, pyrazine, a saline quality, a little cream with an earthy underpin. More of the same on the palate with a tiny touch of bitter almost burnt coffee to the tannins which are drying and chalky textured. A little alcohol warmth borders on the intrusive on the finish. Not as good as I want it to be but defo different to the last tasting (where I remember it being considerably more jammy)
Red
2016 Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon Clémentine Eloise Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Polished oak, cream, currants, sweet spices, concentrated blackcurrant - almost ribena cordial levels, with a little plum and a touch of salinity. In the mouth it's a bit extracted and overblown, the tannins are grippy and mouth coating but it also has an inherent flatness. Meh.
Red
2011 Woodlands Cabernet Franc RĂ©serve de la Cave Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Ripe red over blackcurrant, pencil shavings, a little cedar, sweet spice on the nose. More of the same on the palate, chewy, chalky textured tannins, juicy acidity is nicely in balance and the whole travels long it non intrusive alcohol joining on the finish. Nice.

Closing

I really enjoyed the entry level Chardonnay so I picked up a bottle...
