Introduction

Very relaxed style tasting, restaurant setting. I sat at the bar just next to the station where Maestro Michel Jamais spent some time talking about the wines with me which was very nice. Lovely atmosphere.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Rosé
2017 Venus La Universal Montsant Dido La Solució Rosa Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant

For sure a serious rosa wine with a lot of body, intensity of fruit, and some spice on the nose and finish, but too sweet IMHO.

At first I felt this was slightly too simple in the expression but after some air it yielded to a sweet, spicy licorice tinted nice with some heat on the finish and still a lean profile, despite all the sweet fruit. This would be perfect with some bbq actually.

2018 Mas Martinet Priorat Martinet Bru Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

I felt like that person who prefers the cheapest chocolates in favor of the expensive single estate dark cocoa. This was by far the cheapest wine of the flight except the rosa, but I liked it very much as it was clearly ready to go now, the perfume was less intense and complex but the palate had an inky cabernet style to it leading in to a spicy, soft, garnacha like sweet fruit complexity and finish on the stern and lean side. Perhaps the tannins were slightly drying at the finish. but So good for so few monies.

2017 Mas Martinet Priorat Clos Martinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Grassy, herbal, interesting and compelling aromas, there is structure and texture on this one but the palate is closed and almost bitter at this juncture. Great potential, I would guess. But if you're looking to drink something from this producer next year or so, I would go with the Martinet Brut 2018, which we tasted side by side.

Much softer than the Close Martinet on the attack, with rich round fruit but mid palate the almost harsh sloe berries takes over, morphing into a big bite of saddle leather bags and a very serious finish. This needs time. And a porterhouse steak.

A great wine indeed. Rich but fresh and with a dark chocolate-chili mole feel to it, that savory sweet hit that draws you back and back again. A complete wine.

Closing

I like this producer and I like Priorat. The tide is turning.
