Introduction

Jon very very kindly extended an invitation to the annual guigal release dinner and I, completely unsurprisingly and regardless of cost, accepted with due aplomb

Flight 1 - on arrival (1 note)

served with brushetta corso

Rosé
2017 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rosé France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Cherry, slightly peppery spcie, a savoury quality on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, red cherry, a little texture on th emid palate, savoury as well. Meh

Flight 2 - 1st entree (3 notes)

tasmanian salmon carpaccio, green peas, blood oranges, apple dressing, shaved almonds...the food seemed to bring out the bitterness of a couple of these wines - the straight cdr blanc was probably the best match

White
2018 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Apricot, peach, a little bees wax, a otuch of sandalwood. Juicy, savoury, fruit driven, waxy textured, lightly sweet spiced. Short. Okay for the QPR.
White
2017 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit St. Joseph Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Slight cream, butter, peach, sweet spice, cedar on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, stone fruit, waxy textured, a little alcohol warmth intrusdes on the finish. There is a touch of grip on the font of mouth and mid palate and it gets increasingly bitter with time. Hmm.
White
2017 E. Guigal Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Pretty nose with aromas of apricot, a little sweet spice, a little cedar. Softly juicy, fleshy, glycerol textured, alcohol is more controlled here than with the St Joseph in this bracket. Apricot fruit. Again there is a touch of bitterness but, like the alcohol, well managed. This gets increasingly fleshy with time. Nice.

Flight 3 - wedgie (1 note)

Quick Bordeaux wedgie - B&B know the producer and are bringing it in themselves as a house wine.

Red
2017 Château Picoron Petite Picoron France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Plums, sweet spice, a little plain chocolate backed by a smidge of red berry fruit. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, with medium plus intensity (just) acidity, plummy fruit, slight talc textured tannins with breadth across the palate. There is also a slight herbaceous underpin on the finish. Nice, simple, smashable claret

Flight 4 - 2nd entree (4 notes)

Confit quail, sweet potato mash, blueberry jus.

I have no idea why they persist with CndP. The SJ VdL'H is lovely though

Red
2016 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Red berries over blackberry, a little peper, a little meaty quality with time on the nose. Juicy, silky but drying tannins, fruit slightly muted, a little alcohol warmth on the finish.

Red
2016 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit St. Joseph Rouge France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Vanilla, blackberry, sweet spcie, ripe smelling and worked on the nose - very polished oak, a little meaty note with time in the glass. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, dense, woody tannins caramel, vanilla, fruit a little muted and shows as blackberry. Medium plus length.
Red
2016 E. Guigal St. Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Caramel, vanilla, black fruits; plums, berries and sweet spice. Juicy, more savoury than the St Joseph Lieu Dit, peppery in fact with spiced dark fruits, grippy talc textured tannins, long. Lovely.

2016 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
ON the nose it's slightly reductive initially, gamey and savoury, quite funky in fact but opens with time in the glass to show red berries, sweet spice and garrigue. In the mouth it's fleshy, red fruited, silky tannins, there is a very slight sourness here as well as some alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

Flight 5 - Main course (4 notes)

Wagyu beef cheeks, grilled asparagus, chat potatoes, spring onions, coffee jus.

lots to like here - the Ch. Ampuis and the two Hermitage where most enjoyable

Red
2015 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Meaty, savoury, blackberry that has a touch of jubiness. there is a quite perfumed quality to the fruit as well here. Quite jubey in fact. It's juicy, savoury with black fruits especially brambles that are muted. It's a little lightweight on the palate, tannins are drying and flour textured. Hmm.

Red
2015 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Predominantly blackberry backed by a little apricot, caramel, vanilla and peppery spice...it's got juicy acidity, drying talc textured tannins, lovely wet brambly fruit and a little peppery spice. Beautifully balanced. Still a puppy but yum.

Flight 6 - cheese (3 notes)

marcel petit comte, brillat savarin, quicke's extra reserve cheddar

and here we are with the la la's again...a fitting end to a lovely evening

Red
2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Rich, ripe, blackberry, caramle, slight bacon fat and peppery spice. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry fruit dominates the caramel oak notes, tightly tannic, a little black fruit tea quality - oh, tannins are talc texture but there is a sense of blockiness - bit of a bullyboy at this stage of its inevitably long life
Red
2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Savoury, gamey, slightly dusty, peppery spcie, brambles, blackberry and slightly ashy notes on the nose. in the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, drying, chalky textured tannins, brambly blackberry fruit, a little bacon fat. There is a touch of syrupy concentrate to that fruit. Long. With time a touch of sour jubiness that I associate with whole bunch. Hmm.

Woof. This is quite ashy - I'm guessing plenty of whole bunch - savoury, spcied, peper, bacon fat...fruit plays third fiddle on the nose at best. Medium plus intensity acidity, ashy brambles, peppery fruit, plentiful chalky tannins, travels very long. Though I'm sure these three (La la's) all have pretty much the same oak regime this one hides it best. I find this rather lovely.

Brett had to dial in and the tech was a bit crap but the wines, food and company were superb. What fun!
