Introduction

We are conducting three virtual Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru tastings, starting tonight with the wines from near the Combe on the north side of Gevrey. Next week...on to the "Jacques."

Flight 1 (13 notes)

Red
2009 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
88 points
Black cherry with good weight and roasted meat. Clearly ripe, but nicely balanced. Good now and the next 3-5 years.
Red
2009 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
93 points
Black cherry and berry with intense concentration for its level and classics Gevrey meatiness. Three hours of air really helped this wine open and express its charm. Kept getting better all night long. Great for at least the next couple of decades.

Nothing like the great bottle from last summer. This was getting tired and drying on the finish.

In 97/02/09/10 vertical. This was the highlight. Opened three hours before tasting. Wow, what a treat and amazing wine. Seemed lighter to start, then POW! an extensive expression of black and red cherry with braised meat and lingering, teasing, enticingly complex flavors and bright textures. Great now, with upside.

In 97/02/09/10 vertical. Dense, dark and brooding but with so much concentration. So ripe and youthful, I'd have thought this 2015 if served blind. I liked this more tonight vs most other tasters, but I truly appreciated its upside. I expect this will be like tonight's 2002 in the near future. Serve 2024-, or even better 2029-.

2002 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

In 97/02/09/10 vertical. Very dark color. Very reductive start, SO2 never fully dissipated (despite being open 3 hours before serving), so I would suggest decanting. Once past all that reduction...there is so much here, coming across as both massive and texturally elegant (somehow) at the same time. I think this has further upside as more earthy nuance should/ will come through, but others thought it at its zenith right now. Only time will tell.

In 97/02/09/10 vertical. I had very low expectations, and they were far exceeded...this is a great 1997. Shockingly fresh with a it of too much new oak still protruding, but with classically black fruited/ meaty Gevrey character throughout. If served blind, I would have thought younger (2000?).
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
89 points
Charming overall with mature black fruit, mint and spice hints and a mature, engaging Gevrey character that I would have thought slightly older, probably 1999 given the mint. Very good now.
Red
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

If the Jadot 2002 seemed older, this certainly seemed younger. Great aromatic start with so much ripe black cherry everywhere, but so 2005 on its palate with massive, chewy tannins I found unfriendly, while others were more easily able to address. I like this wine's 2025- potential, but it will never be a friendly wine.
Red
2006 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Dirty. Not in the good way.
Red
2006 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

I accidentally opened this instead of Champeaux (given the northside Gevrey 1er Cru theme), but it turned out to be one of highlights of the tasting. Dense black fruit with a surprising brightness for the vintage with excellent clarity, precision and length. So enjoyable right now.
Red
2005 Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Classic Gevrey with black fruit, roasted bloody meat, lots of power with lots of tannins that are still resolving, but getting to a great place. Still firm but so much here, and certainly having further upside. I liked this more than most others tonight.
Red
2010 Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
Black and red cherry with good weight, better length and textural brightness. Very finessed finish with more complexity likely to emerge. Very good now, certainly better in another 5 years.
