Introduction

An ancient variety, pinot is a chameleon: progenitor of a whole family of vines, grown the world over in every color, capable of a breathtaking range of wine styles. We’ll go drinking in search of its X factor.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2019 Lucien Muzard Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
90 points
Decanted for about an hour; it needs it! But once it opens up it’s quite nice for a Bourgogne Rouge. The nose is not particularly expressive—maybe a bit of juicy fruit gum and plum skin—but the palate is nicely crunchy, strawberry, red cherry with a slightly wild and earthy note. Really juicy but balanced and hard to stop drinking. Great QPR. Yum!
White
2018 Holger Koch Herrenstück Grauburgunder Germany, Baden
90 points
Delicious Pinot gris from Baden! Nose is very expressive with ripe orchard fruit and a hint of spice. Palate is ripe and round but not too rich. Acidity is definitely present and helps keep it fresh but it’s not exactly crunchy. Very pleasant
White
2018 Beck-Hartweg Pinot Gris Dambach-la-ville France, Alsace
90 points
Nose is earthy with an almost blue cheese note and peachy orchard fruit. Palate is rich and round and residual sugar (but not dessert wine by any means) with a superripe honeydew, cantaloupe note. Enjoyable only with the right food (blue cheese is definitely a win here), but with the right food it’s pretty good.
