Introduction

I found out that two good friends were born in 1979, so we had them over for dinner.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2013 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Tradition Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
93 points
[Pop and pour around 5:30pm.] Golden color. Rich and complex in the mouth. Very flavorful. Goes well with mixed apps.
Red
1979 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
[Double decanted for a half hour at 2:30pm.] Cork is saturated, but the wine smells like it should with dark ripe fruit and forest floor. Drunk around 7pm. Classic Rabaja with lots of dark fruit and mulch. Excellent length. Impressive given that it's not considered a great vintage. Probably at its peak now.
Red
1979 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
[Double decanted for a half hour at 1pm.] Drunk around 8pm. Nose of licorice and dark red fruits. Rich and full in the mouth still with some tannin. Continues to open up. By 11pm, it has softened with a long and juicy finish. Nose of roses and coffee. A wow wine in a so-so vintage. Still quite youthful. I wish I had a few more of these!

Closing

I was very happy how all three wines showed. I only wish I had more of that 1979 Conterno.
