Flight 1 (5 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Gonet-Médeville Champagne Premier Cru Tradition Brut
Disgorged September, 2013. Dull yellow, minimal bead. Yeasty, dry, fairly neutral.
White
2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
Bright yellow. Inimitable aromas of sea shore and seaweed. Fabulous glycerine feel with limestone base. Swirling lemon pith and stone flavors, but this is much more driven by the soil and salinity than by fruit. Crisp, cutting acidity. A Chablis like no other, just a marvel, and one to preserve one’s faith after a completely shot bottle of 2008 Les Clos the other night.

Red
1988 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage
After having the 1998 last night, we had the good fortune of a friend opening this tonight. Light garnet. Stemmy, fennel, French Syrah nose with a touch of woodsmoke. Lean, dry, high acid. Discrete, mineral, and classic. There is a remaining core of red fruit buried deeply beneath the structure, but it doesn’t last long once the bottle gets sime air. Wonderful but much more old school and less silky and supple than the ‘98.
Red
1993 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares
Fading red. Strong wintergreen. Medium weight but still fairly meaty. Strong backbone of acidity and mixed black and red fruit with a backing of soil and sappiness. Excellent maturing Grand Cru perhaps lacking an element of excitement. It's funny that we only drank this since it was rejected for auction due to a slightly depressed cork--glad things worked out the way they did!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 Château d'Yquem
Deep golden orange. Burnt caramel aromas and honey. Sweet but amazing balance, elegance, citrus, acidity, and great lift.
