Emidio Pepe tasting

Clos Pasoh

Tasted August 29, 2021 by melvinyeowq with 85 views

Introduction

Very informative tasting organised by the local importer of Emidio Pepe. Traditional winemaking that uses mainly old oak barrels, grapes are tread by foot. All the old vine bottlings are decanted by hand and topped up with the same vintage before recorking, hence the corks show the year that the wine was released. To reduce the confusion, all old vines bottlings now come with a stamp on the label.

Haven't tasted many Pepes before other than a red and the rose, but all the wines on the day were very compelling with brilliant aromatics.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2016 Emidio Pepe Pecorino Colli Aprutini IGT Italy, Abruzzi, Colli Aprutini IGT
A very serious Pecorino compared to the supermarket plonk that I tried back when I was in Europe. Very good weight with a waxy and round texture, zesty acidity. Tremendously gulpable wine.
White
2015 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo
Made in a similar vein to Valentini's Trebbiano, a serious and oxidative expression of the grape. This was a step up from the Pecorino for me, great length and vivacity of fruit such as blood orange and grapefruit. Very much a contemplative wine.
Red
1983 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Popped and poured from a new bottle, still a tight showing compared to an earlier bottle that was opened in the morning apparently. Bricking in colour, showed the most VA out of all the bottles. Tertiary notes of mushroom and forest floor, with a slightly raisiny note that I didn't like so much. Definitely more of an acquired taste but with such wines you are drinking history.
Red
2001 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Showing more age and development than the bottle I had a couple of months ago, tannins are less firm but still a lovely drink. Secondary characteristics like mushroom and tobacco more prominent. Long way to go yet for this wine.

2010 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Deeper and more structured than 2012, with rich dark cherries and fiercer tannins that suggested that this wine still needed more time. Definitely would appeal to Bordeaux drinkers more. Stunning potential but not the most approachable today.
Red
2012 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Most classic of them all from a cooler vintage. Very approachable now with prominent, but not excessive acidity, cool plum fruit. Love the balance on this wine, everything in the right place at the moment.
