Introduction

Riesling tasting at Domäne Wachau in Dürnstein, Austria, organized by Weinakademie Österreich. Roman Horvath of Domäne Wachau, Mathias Hirtzberger, Weingut Malat and Alwin Jurtschitsch each presented a flight of three of their Rieslings.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2019 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
88 points
Flight 1, Wine 1: Light lemon colour. Floral notes, citrus, stone fruit, peach, and light minerality, with fresh, sour acidity, and average to good length. Medium-bodied, with good concentration and moderate complexity.
White
2019 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Riesling Smaragd Achleiten Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
89 points
Flight 1, Wine 2: Light to medium lemon colour. Floral notes, citrus, stone fruit, lactic note, and light flinty minerality, with a lightly buttery texture, and good length. Good concentration, moderate complexity. I preferred it to the Singerriedel.
White
1995 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Riesling Smaragd Achleiten Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
Flight 1, Wine 3: From magnum. Medium yellow gold. Dried yellow fruit, citrus, light honey, light petrol, and signs of bottle age, with very good length. Medium-bodied, medium-complex, with good concentration. Still holding up well. Drink now.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2019 Weinhofmeisterei Mathias Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Kollmitz Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
Flight 2, Wine 1: The Kollmitz vineyard typically is harvested a week later than Loiben. Bright light to medium lemon colour. White flowers, ripe citrus, stone fruit, and mineral notes, with lively acidity, and very good length. Medium- to light-bodied, lively, and fresh. Very good.
White
2017 Weinhofmeisterei Mathias Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Kollmitz Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
88 points
Flight 2, Wine 2: The Kollmitz vineyard typically is harvested a week later than Loiben. But 2017 was an early vintage in general. Bright medium to light lemon colour. Ripe citrus, ripe stone fruit, ripe apple, pineapple. Lightly spicy finish (some botrytis?). Good concentration upfront, thinner through middle and end. Very enjoyable and easy to drink, but also very upfront. At their current stages, I prefer the 2016 and the 2019.
White
2016 Weinhofmeisterei Mathias Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Kollmitz Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
89 points
Flight 2, Wine 3: The Kollmitz vineyard typically is harvested a week later than Loiben. Bright medium yellow gold. Ripe stone fruit, ripe peach, orange marmalade, light honey, lactic notes, light spice, and a hint of petrol. Medium to full, with good concentration, complexity, and length. The profile indicate inclusion of some botrytised grapes, but according to Mathias they only used the healthiest of grapes.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2019 Malat Riesling 1ÖTW Steinbühel Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
90 points
Flight 3, Wine 1: Spontaneous fermentation. Light lemon colour. Nose slightly reduced. Stone fruit, peach, apple, citrus, with good acidity and very good persistence. Medium-bodied, clean, and fresh. Well-balanced. Very pleasing. Stylistically, I preferred it to the Silberbichl. 90+
White
2019 Malat Riesling 1ÖTW Reserve Silberbichl Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
89 points
Flight 3, Wine 2: Spontaneous fermentation. Light lemon colour. Reserved nose. Yellow fruit, ripe apple, light minerality, with good acidity and good length. A little fuller and broader than the Steinbühel. 89+
White
2012 Malat Riesling 1ÖTW Reserve Silberbichl Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
91 points
Flight 3, Wine 3: Spontaneous fermentation. Medium lemon colour. Stone fruit (dried and fresh), ripe citrus, some honey, and some petrol, with well-integrated acidity, and superb length of the lightly spicy finish. Medium-bodied. Well-balanced, clean, and fresh. In a good place!

Flight 4, Wine 1: Low intervention winemaking. Spontaneous fermentation, low SO2, unfiltered. Medium lemon colour, slightly cloudy. Citrussy, stone fruit and apple, with lively acidity, and very good length. Fresh and energetic.
