Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
1988 Le Carillon de l'Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion
91 points
Pale garnet, and significantly browning and fading. Still some fresh blackberry, plums, and dark florals, and fresh herbs. Softened and rounded tannins, with acid freshness, and light bodied, and flavours of medium ripe blackberry, cloves, nutmeg cinnamon, florals, and a slight bit of herbs and white fungals. Medium length and good complexity
Red
1999 La Dame de Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
90 points
Deep ruby, some edge fading. Nose of medium intensity with dark berry aromas, and pepper spices. Some bite from the tannins, mouthwatering acids, and quite a weight on the palate, with flavours of ripe blackberry, dark florals, grass, black pepper, cloves and nutmeg. Good classic St Estephe flavours, but somehow the finish seemed to be somewhat lacking in length and complexity
Red
2004 Réserve de la Comtesse France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Deep ruby, and quite heavily extracted. A flamboyant nose, with blackberry, pepper, and cloves. Tannins fairly strong, and quite some weight, and some heightened alcohol heat, with tart black cherry, and a lot of cloves and nutmeg, as well as fresh cut grass. A fairly long finish, and ebbing with energy. Nice!
Red
2008 Hauts de Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Medium ruby, and quite some extraction. Some mint and grass on the nose, as well as red and black cherry feels. Tight tannins and mouthwatering acids, and a lot of savoury flavours, along with bright berries and cloves, as well as mint. Medium finish
Red
2011 Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours Grande Réserve France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
92 points
Medium ruby. Aromas of violets, ripe blackberry and blueberry, and a bit of cinnamon. Some tannic bite, mouthwatering acids, and medium bodied, with dark floral, liquorice and ripe blackberry flavours. Generally soft, yet it’s able to sustain a finish that was pretty long, and fairly complex

2009 Echo de Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Deep ruby, and viscous. Strong, deep nose with black cherry, black floral, liquorice aromas, as well as pepper and cinnamon. Some bite from the tannins and mouthwatering acids, with dark yet ripe energetic fruit flavours, savoury briny feels, and dry spicy nutmeg. Quite a length, and fairly complex finish. Nice!
Red
2016 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Le Lievre France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Deep ruby, and highly extracted. Pronounced nose, with ripe blackberry and cassis, and lots of charred wood smoke. Tight tannins, with ripe prunish fruits, grass, tea tree, cigarbox and charred wood. Fairly long, led by the wood smoke
Red
2010 Clos du Marquis France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Deep ruby. Strong nose of cinnamon and cloves, as well as some vanilla, reminiscent of new French barriques, tart cherry, herbs, and cut grass. A lot of tannin power on the palate, something mouthwatering acids, and fairly ripe blackberry and cassis, cut grass and herbs, cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla. Fairly long finish and quite complex. Nice!
