Flight 1 - Champagne Opener (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Initial (Dég. 10/21- 2009) France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
My first Selosse. Heard about the oxy characteristics, but this tasted slightly too oxidized and darker color than expected. Very savory and complete.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Substance (Dég. 10/2- 2015) France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Different from the 09, clearly younger and fresher. Had a great body and palate coating fullness. Very enjoyable to start.

Flight 2 - Champagne Flight (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 France, Champagne
Interestingly my second time having this and I was underwhelmed both times. Nose was a bit muted at first, classic DP sweetness, but not much else there. 4/4 in the flight.
White - Sparkling
2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
97 points
My first Salon. Extremely tight and stayed that way for hours. After 4 hours it finally started to give and the best sip of the night was the last sip of the night at the 6 hour mark. Precise and complete with layers and layers of complexity. The full package with the right balance of minerality and a hint of sweetness. So much promise. Might not peak for decades. 1/4 in flight and top 3 WOTN.

White - Sparkling
2002 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Late Release France, Champagne
First bottle of this beauty. Also tight at first, but did release after 2 hours to reveal the classic Cristal nose and balanced palate. Needs more time to shine. 3/4 in flight.
White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Classic Krug with citrus layered with pineapple. Loved the body and weight on the palate. Finish lingers nicely. Also needed some time to open up, but is showing closer to ready at this point than the others. Different, but in line with the Cristal in terms of scoring. 2/4 in the flight.

Flight 3 - Echezeaux Flight (3 notes)

Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
97 points
Immediately expressive with sous bois, soy and Vosne spice. The vegetal notes were perfectly in balance with the fruit. Palate was luxurious and sexy. Tobacco on the nose after considerable time in the glass. A favorite of the group for sure. Top 2 WOTN.
Red
2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Some vegetal/stem notes that did blow off with air. Fruit is there and a touch of spice, but seemed disjointed and shut down pretty early in the glass. Not ready.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Showed its class over the 2007. Much more floral than the 1990 with the classic spice. Good weight on the palate and ripe fruit from the more solar vintage. Still had baby fat around the edges and tight tannins on the finish.

Flight 4 - RSV Flight (3 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Lovely to compare with the 2007 in the previous flight. RSV soft floral notes. Lovely drink, but outclassed and not particularly memorable. 3/3 in the flight.

Wonderful nose. Exotic with spice and layered texture. I could smell this all night. Palate is full, but not too round. Great weight and balance between the fruit and tannins. 2010 is a special vintage to me. Was lovely on release and is still shining. Fun to compare to the 2010 LT in a later flight as it has very similar characteristics.

2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Love 2014 in general, but this was showing extremely young and tight. Time did open it up quite a bit and it was much more enjoyable at the end of the night. 2/3 in the flight.

Flight 5 - Palate Cleanser (1 note)

White
1990 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Surprise entry at the last minute. This had it all, incredible nose, complex and fully developed palate, ripe and luxurious with a solid spine of acidity. White fruits and flowers on the nose and finish for days. This is why we age white Burg!

Flight 6 - 70s Flight (2 notes)

Red
1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
98 points
Color was pale showing the age, but the intensity wasn't dialed down at all. Soaring from the glass with loads of hoisin, black tea and spices. Ethereal and fully integrated palate with so many layers of complexity. Did not need much air, but plateaued for most of the night before finally fading after 4 hours. WOTN
Red
1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
The jury is out on this one. Didn't have the expected color of the age, and didn't smell or taste as I would expect, although I haven't had this vintage before. Some enjoyed it, some said it seemed like a different wine. Personally not my favorite of the night. At the end of the night it almost smelled like pine sol. 3/3 in the flight.

Flight 7 - 2017 + LT Flight (3 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
97 points
Amazing addition by the host. Have loved the wine every time I've had it and it did not disappoint tonight. Full and complete, powerful and complex. So young, but the tannins were not all obtrusive. Luxurious palate and long finish. Tons of life ahead, my favorite recent vintage.
Red
2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
96 points
Very interesting to compare with the 10, but also compare with the 17 RSV. Less power than the 10, but no less stunning. Class in a glass. Aromas of spice and red fruit. The last glass at the end of the night really showcased it's potential and glad to have loaded up on this cuvee.

Being paired with the 17 LT didn't do this any favors. Completely outclassed, as might be expected. However, drinking it first almost as a separate flight, it was lovely. Full of fruit and spice with a nice finish. Also benefited from more air and another glass at the end of the night opened up quite a bit more. Not close to WOTN, but I could drink this every day. A beautiful drink and long life ahead.

Flight 8 - Richebourg Flight (2 notes)

Red
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Color was much darker than the other cuvees of the night. Brooding and powerful. Large scale wine that needs considerably more time in the cellar, but has the potential to be quite good. Needed significant air time to start to show. Benefited from being next to the 99.
Red
1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
So dark and brooding, tight and coiled it wasn't even drinkable for the first hour in the glass. Just too much. Time did soften it, but even the last sip of the night was intense. A hedonistic experience at this time, but seems like it will last forever. Drink in 20 years.

Flight 9 - Nightcap (1 note)

Spirits
1994 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Marc de Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Marc de Bourgogne
First time having this brandy. Said 90 proof on the bottle, but tasted like 120 proof. Wish I had more of a palate for brandy, it might have been more of a special experience, but still a perfect way to end an incredible night.
