Their House

Introduction

Usual gathering of the B clan - not all present.
Brought an assortment of wines for: hors d'oeuvres, main course, and dessert.

Flight 1 - Wines with hors d'oeuvres (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2018 Villa Franz Riesling feinherb Germany, Rheingau
88 points
PnP, chilled. A very easy drinking, only slightly off-dry Riesling that was a great way to start off Thanksgiving dinner - while eating hors d'oeuvres.
Red
2014 Lucia Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
88 points
Based on previous bottles of Lucia Pinot Noir, this was decanted for 20 minutes and could have used 15 to 20 minutes more. Nose and medium bodied palate were loaded with red fruits and earth, with some spice. Good alternative to a German Riesling as an hors d'oeuvres wine for Thanksgiving. Should hold for a couple of years.

Flight 2 - Wines with Dinner (2 notes)

Red
2012 Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
91 points
Slo-oxed for 30 minutes with some sediment. Red fruit and spice on the nose. These carry over to the medium bodied palate along with a modest earthy component and balancing acidity. Enjoyed with the main course for Thanksgiving dinner. This wine should easily make the decade mark.
Red
2013 Tensley Syrah BMT USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Slo-oxed for about 30 minutes but continued to open with more air. From Magnum, as I believe all BMT and OGT are. So much attractive dark red and blue fruit that some called the wine "sweet" and thought the wine had some Residual Sugar (?!). The acidity was balancing, there was some spice, and all tannins were resolved. This wine should hold for several more years, and may show some further development. Enjoyed with the main course for Thanksgiving dinner, alongside a Zinfandel.

Flight 3 - Wines with dessert (2 notes)

White - Fortified
1989 Casa Manoel Boullosa Carcavelos Quinta dos Pesos Portugal, Lisboa, Carcavelos
flawed
Our first experience with Carcavelos - purchased during our last trip to Portugal in Sept. 2019.
Slo-oxed for 1 hour and served with a slight chill. The wine was cloudy and there was a definite "grapey" aroma. The palate was not as expressive as most of the Carcavelos TNs, irrespective of vintage, and the 19.5% abv was quite evident on the finish. For these reasons we suspect the wine was flawed and will not rate. Was served as one of two dessert wines for Thanksgiving dinner.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
2012 Macari Vineyards Block E Red USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
A blend of 44% Merlot, 25% Cab Franc, 21% Cab Sauvignon and 10% Viognier. Produced in the ice wine "style" where the grapes are pressed while frozen.
PnP. Very nice concentrated red fruit aromas and flavors with balancing acidity. The palate was slightly off-dry and there were touches of honey and orange on the finish. Could hold, but probably best to drink soon.

Closing

Drank about three quarters of a bottle per person.
Tensley Syrah BMT was the WOTN.
