Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2013 Château de Fosse-Seche Saumur Arcane France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Some wooliness on this and muddled green fruit. Someone mentioned that this might have seen some heat damage but I thought that this was down to bottle variation due to non-interventionist winemaking. Not the biggest fan of this.
White
2019 Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Clos de Frémine France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Lean and fresh, in the mould of new-school Burgundy whites that are all about acid. Initially quite reductive, but the citrus fruits became more expressive with air. The fruit had sufficient heft and body to support the raciness, and the wine had a lovely saline quality to it. Reminded me of the Dancer the other week in terms of its evolution with air.
White
2014 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Wow an experienced taster guessed this as a Vatan. My first time trying a Cotat white and I was also very impressed. Typical Sauvignon Blanc nose, very aromatic with some green fruits. Some chalkiness with high acid, a driven finish. Some thought it was a bit thin but I thought the minerality being at the forefront worked well. Very youthful still.
White
2014 Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults Savennières Clos du Papillon France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
A strange one. Had a nose of a Riesling, quite heady and ripe with excessive alcohol, and a finish of taking a shot of hard liquor. Some residual sugar on this as well, just didn’t come together for me.
Red
2004 Philippe Alliet Chinon Coteau de Noiré France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Bordeaux-like with the oak on the nose, light red fruits with a little rusticity on the palate. Still very fresh, I think these Loire reds age gracefully and are a terrific value, albeit without the same complexity or depth as a good Bordeaux. Liked this a lot more than others at the table.
Red
2017 Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Les Quartiers France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil
Brought this as an extra bottle from leftovers. On first day it was a little plummy and raisined, but become a lot lighter and elegant on the second day. Unfortunately on the third day the fruit had disappeared, leaving only the acid.
