Introduction

Practice session for WSET blind tasting exam. I brought several of the wines, the rest were tasted double-blind.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2005 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Grüner Veltliner Terrassen Kamptal Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
89 points
Open 24 hours. Bright, pale lemon to pale gold appearance. Clean, youthful nose of medium intensity. Notes of waxy green fruit and a pronounced crushed stone minerality. There is also a gentle but pungent vegetal aroma reminiscent of the leaves of marigolds. On the palate this is dry or just barely off-dry, with med(+) acidity and med(+) alcohol. Flavors are dominated by green fruit and mineral, with some citric and honey accents. Lingering finish with cracked white pepper and a touch of alcoholic warmth. I prefer the wine's pronounced minerality tonight, and overall i find it more interesting (see previous note).
White
2006 Francine et Olivier Savary Chablis Sélection Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis
Bright, pale lemon with green tinge, turning water-white at the rim. Initially heavy sulfur nose, very youthful, with time developing almond and mineral notes. Not very aromatic overall (should have been my clue). Dry, a little tactile but very light bodied, almost watery in the mouth. Very strong flavor of almond extract, and some floral, stone fruit skin flavor. Medium acidity, medium(-) alcohol, medium length with lingering almond and perhaps a little oak derived flavor. Balanced and elegant, this improved in the glass.. Quality acceptable to good (length, balance), but i had trouble guessing the variety. The almond notes had me thinking white Rhone, yet the wine was relatively non-aromatic, which should have pointed me to chardonnay. Tasted blind.
White
2006 Meyer-Fonné Riesling France, Alsace
Bright, pale lemon appearance. Clean and highly aromatic nose of medium(+) intensity, with developing golden fruit, golden raisin, honeyed apricot, honey, a little tropical fruit. Floral. Slightly off-dry on the palate with medium(+) acidity (sticks out a bit) and medium(-) body. Nice palate weight, flavors of pineapple, apple cider, honey. Low alcohol, full midpalate and medium(+) length. Quite good quality, i estimated cost at $20-$25 though i did not pick this as a new release. I correctly guessed Alsace riesling. Tasted blind.
Red
2004 Germano Ettore Langhe Nebbiolo Serralunga Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
88 points
Clear, ruby color of slightly pale intensity, lightening to pink at the rim. Somewhat lifted, youthful aromas of strawberry, cherry and rhubarb on the nose. A little mute. Crunchy, relatively simple fresh fruit. Dry on the palate with med(-) tannin and low alcohol. A lighter, almost bistro style nebbiolo, with beautiful purity of fruit, mostly primary strawberry and cherry, and excellent integration of medium acidity. As far as typicity, this style doesn't exactly scream nebbiolo to me, but it is on the young side and could probably develop for another 3-5 years. I liked this much better than the 2005 vintage.
Red
2005 Domaine Tempier Bandol France, Provence, Bandol
Medium ruby purple color, lightening at the rim. Medium(+) tears. Lifted nose, seems youthful and primary. Lifted aromas of red and blue fruit, spice, slight vegetal, floral, touch of rubbing alcohol. There's also a component reminiscent of citric acid coated sour gummy worms. Dry on the palate with medium(+) acidity and coarse, chalky medium(-) tannins. Despite the nose, alcohol does not come through on the palate. Medium(-) body, medium flavor intensity, with liqueur like tart red and blue fruits and earth. Quality is acceptable to good, i guessed a price of $15 to $20 but had no idea what this was. Not recommended; seems rather light in body and concentration for a Tempier Bandol, though i prefer this to the jammy, over the top 2004. Tasted blind.
Red
2001 Bodegas Sierra Cantabria Rioja Crianza Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
88 points
Ruby core, medium intensity, turning lighter at the rim, with a hint of garnet/orange. Medium intensity developing nose with aromas of macerated cherries and strawberries, vanilla, light vegetal. The fruit is slightly liqueur-ish in ripeness and there are some coconutty, aromatic wood notes. In the mouth the wine is sweet on the attack, with sweet cooked pie cherries, vanilla, and strawberry, with med(+) acidity and med(-) tannin. Medium body, reasonable alcohol, flavors same as the nose, with dried herbs and strong coconut-vanilla flavors. Medium length. Overall i like the maturing flavors here, as well as the acidity and low alcohol. There is a bit of fruit-sweetness though that seems designed for American palates, and the coconut and vanilla notes are a little overwhelming. This is definitely ready to drink, may improve in the very near term but i would drink over the next 3 years if this bottle is representative.
Red
2004 Ashbourne South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay
Only had a quick taste. Tart red fruits, vitamins, dead dessicated animal/formaldehyde, plenty of resiny oak. Quite concentrated, and very weird.
