Introduction
Francois Cotat tasting with his main cuvees and some rarities, from 1999 tot 2020
Flight 1 - Setting the stage: basis SB from Sancerre (1 note)
White
2021 Domaine Andre Neveu Sancerre Le Grand Fricambault Silex
87 points
Typical SB aroma’s; box wood, gooseberry, citrus, granny smith, herbs. High acidity, medium finish
Flight 2 - Tasting the 2018 cuvees (4 notes)
White
2018 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Caillottes
90 points
Tasted twice over the course over the evening and the second glass was much better after 2 hours of air, especially on the palate. Rounder than Les Culs at this moment with dried flowers, pear, nectarine, chalky, waxy, herbs. High acidity

2018 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu

From Terres Blanches 0,9 ha vineyard, facing south south-east with a 45% slope. Also here an immense difference between the first glass (PnP) and the second glass 2 hours later. Green apple, honey, citrus, ‘soft’ grass notes. Medium acidity, great length with clearly some RS.

White
2018 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre La Grande Côte
91 points
Showed better right in the first glass than Les Cul, but a bit edgier than the Monts Damnes. Citrus, young yellow apple, grapefruit, tangerine, a bit waxy and a oily mouthfeel. Medium+ acidity, long finish

White
2018 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés
92 points
Tasted next to Les Cul and La Grande Cote 2018 and this showed best. Obviously very, very young, but already lovely, so much going on and so much potential. Richer than de Grande Cote without being ‘fat’; spicy, pear, red apple, melon, a hint of honey. High acidity and a long finish with some RS

Flight 3 - Tasting rose (2 notes)
Rosé
2020 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Chavignol Rosé
91 points
At this moment very red fruit driven (strawberry, raspberry) with a mineral core to it, but this is next level rose. A bit of RS in the long finish. This should age really well. Would love to compare a 15 year old Chavignol Rose with a Tondonia Rosado GR with the same age. Very different wine making of course but would be great each in its own category

Rosé
2018 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Chavignol Rosé

Tasted side by side with the 2020 and the 2 years age already make quite some difference. Also red fruit driven, but more spicy, it has a next layer to it. Very long finish

Flight 4 - Older (2 notes)
White
2010 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés
92 points
Getting close to peak drinking. I don’t understand other CT notes that it is going downhill, this bottle was singing with great complexity. Very expressive on the nose with ripe gooseberry, floral, honey, baked pear, some flinty notes, minerality. High acidity and long and lingering finish

White
2008 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu
91 points
This felt tight and a bit young, which sounds strange for a 14 year old Sauvignon Blanc, but tasted next to the 2003 which was singing. Green apple, fennel, grapefruit. High acidity, medium+ finish. Better in 5 years

Flight 5 - 2003 side by side (2 notes)
White
2003 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu
93 points
For me the WOTN. Amazing that an almost 20 year old SB can be so good, especially from a heat struck vintage. Juniper, gooseberry, honey, spicy. Almost like an old Savennieres, ripe & thick. Beautiful

Tasted side by side with the Les Culs Beaujou from 2003, and although this was good the Les Culs was much better. This had a clear oxidative note to it with apple sauce, baked apple, quite complex. If tasted blind I probably would have guessed old Chenin. Medium+ acidity, long finish
Flight 6 - Rare rouge (1 note)
Red
1999 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Rouge Chavignol
Apparently quite a rare bottle this Chavignol rouge. Cotat does not like malo in his whites but also not in his reds and I had the feeling that the Brett notes I got (medicinal, chemical, smokey, animal) have something to do with that. Furthermore sur bois, dried red fruit, some chocolate notes. Medium+ acidity. Not my favorite
