Introduction

A look at various Rhone-inspired blends along with other blends in countries such as Spain and South Africa. One long lineup and tasted sighted.

Flight 1 - 2021 Vintage (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
2021 Niepoort Vinho Verde Nat'Cool Branco Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
83 points
Cloudy apple juice colour with a light petillance, the entry has bruised apple, pears and fermenting esters. Edgy, intense entry, there is
freshness, crunchy acidity and served cold feels like green apple unsugared sauce, infused with lemon and pear flesh. Hasn’t much mid-palate but supposed to be fun and fruity and is. My issue is there is a savoury note that rises and feels bacterial.
White
2021 Creation Wines Roussanne Viognier South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay
87 points
Lifted with floral tones, peach blossom and orange.
A fresh acid on entry, this is youthful and vibrant with a juicy, fleshy mid-palate and a delicate fragrance that runs through the core of the wine. Focussed, and intense, there is a spiced pear on the finish that adds interest. Delicious and extremely gluggable.
White
2021 Luddite Wines Saboteur White South Africa, Cape South Coast
90 points
Chenin, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc blend, the aromas are savoury with barnyard, wet rocks and damp seaweed.
Fabulous saline entry with cordite, smoky, gunpowder and sea kelp. The vibrant acid is incisive, but this offset with peach flesh, Williams pear and starfruit. Delicate and linear the wine has a dry chalky texture to the back palate, some savoury old wood nuances and a gentle spice. Medium length.
White
2021 Villion Blanc De L’Atlantique South Africa, Western Cape
90 points
A blend of Viognier and Chardonnay the nose is packed with fresh apple and pear and some apple puree.
A sweet entry filled with fleshy ripe Golden Delicious apples with is a hint of spice. The wine is youthful and vibrant with a sumptuous texture but offset with a vibrant line of acidity. A long finish with apple, forelle pear flesh, and a touch of lemon juice. Lovely!

Flight 2 - 2020 Vintage (2 notes)

White
2020 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Les Vignes de Bila-Haut Blanc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
87 points
Lifted and fresh with gentle spice, aniseed, fennel fronds, Angelica, tarragon, steel wool and a red apple.
Medium weight, the wine has fair concentration of fruit with fresh acidity and lots of peppery edges, especially cayenne and fleshes out nicely to a dry and chalky finish.
Well-balanced and rounded, it lacks a little mid-palate depth.
White
2020 Reino Thiart Marié White South Africa, Western Cape
88 points
Deeply fruit with ripe apricot, meebos, damp tree bark and ripe yellow apple. Initially, there was a pong, but that blew off.
The entry continues with good fruit intensity and spice elements with dried peach, apricot, red apple and pear. Rich yet with a freshness and breezy gait, the wine has a lively acidity to support it. Spice-edged, there is a savoury note with dried leaves and forest floor that adds some interest. Fairly long

Flight 3 - 2019 Vintage (5 notes)

White
2019 Château de Saint Cosme Les Deux Albion Blanc Domaine de Saint Cosme France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange
86 points
40% Viognier, 30% Picpoul and 20% Marsanne, rest being Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Ugni Blanc,
An initial floral, peachy blossom lift broadens to gorgeous ripe peach, nectarines, white pepper, sweet oregano and dried marjoram. A touch of spice suggests oak. There is a slightly syrupy, oily texture making the richer and rounder in the mid-palate
White
2019 Conceito Douro Contraste Branco Portugal, Douro
89 points
Rabigato, Códega, Códega do Larinho, Arinto blend majority stainless steel with 30% new French oak; Light and breezy with a gentle lift of fresh herbs, fennel frond and plenty of Buchu.
A delicate entry bursting with mineral-edged acidity that builds, yet the texture has a creaminess upon which sit lemon, white lemon pepper, fennel, Buchu and the freshness of an alpine meadow. Linear and almost a little lean with its acidity, this is still a pretty smart wine with medium to long length, made in an elegant and approachable style.

White
2019 Luddite Wines Saboteur White South Africa, Cape South Coast
92 points
Deep yellow-gold in colour, there is an initial pong and compost note that blows off. This reveals plenty of yellow fruits, Cape gooseberry, and dried papaya, yet that savoury element does linger.
A rich yet lifted entry with some freshness. There is a lees element alongside the return of compost, smoked herbs and Asian pear. Lingering alongside is a cordite note and chalky texture that give it some texture and grittiness. Smart wine.

White
2019 Conceito Douro Branco Portugal, Douro
93 points
Fabulously complex and penetrating nose showing freshly picked wild herbs, alpine meadow and sprinkles of warm spices.
A vibrant entry with a piercing acidity with mineral and chalk edging towards gunflint. Bright and engaging, the flavours are herbal, green apple, lemon zest and crushed stones.
The wine has tightness yet that richness from wood-ageing, a focussed chiselled feel and long length.
Exceptional!
White
2019 Domaine Auguste Clape St. Péray France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
90 points
Rather subtle and muted at first. As it was coaxed, there is some cordite, green pear, chamomile and kumquat, perhaps lime citrus.
Delicate wine on entry with a savoury tang, the wine remains subdued with the flavours slowly seeping out:
Quince, tree bark and mandarin.
A reasonably long length with persistence throughout the mouth, there is certain fleshy quality to the mid-palate. Its elegance and ballerina poise are eye-catching despite its more reticent feel.

Flight 4 - 2018-2015 Vintage (3 notes)

White
2018 Strandveld Vineyards Adamastor South Africa, Cape South Coast, Cape Agulhas, Elim
87 points
Lifted aromas with classic herbal Semillon-infused note with a salty edgy, kakkebos, green leaves and tangerine peel.
Medium-bodied, the wine is linear with a pleasant saline tang and excellent focus with an orange leaf element and a hint of spice. Uncomplicated wine, yet the acid is a tad harsh, and this chalky texture distracts. Falls away to the finish but is still a pretty good Elim example.
White
2017 M. Chapoutier Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem Blanc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
87 points
Lifted aromas with a sultry warmth of the south of France. Damp wood, spice, green peppercorns, lime and mineral alongside fresh herbal scrub/meadow.
The entry is ripe, the mid-palate broad. Terrific flavour intensity with more white than green pepper and citrus coming forward: more lime and grapefruit and pressed white flowers, even a touch of savoury elements (the Mediterranean scrub diverts more to Scottish heather!) The wine has good length and medium acid that lead to a bone-dry conclusion that feels a little short.
White
2015 Domaine de Trévallon Blanc France, Provence, Alpilles
93 points
Deep gold with yellow edges
Classic cordite and struck match on the nose with some quarry dust.
The entry is medium-bodied with incredible drive and persistence, all kept on track with fresh sea ozone and saline notes. Focused and direct, the wine has depth and length with dried fruits and a touch of peach. No fat here, complex.

Flight 5 - 2008 & 2009 Vintage (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine Cauhapé Jurançon Sec Chant Des Vignes France, Southwest France, Jurançon Sec
89 points
Medium to deep yellow notes,
Interesting lifted notes of herb, leaf tea towards chamomile, honeycomb and a musky raised element. There is some evolution, yet a fresh Sauvignon edge gives a delightful brightness. No botrytis.
A rapier-like forceful acid on entry, this has great freshness for 1a 14 yr old wine. There is flesh aplenty to coat the forceful acidity with pineapple chunks, stewed green tea and honey, some spice and sultana.
A good concentration of flavour, the wine really penetrates.
Long finish, linear, the acid is somewhat piercing, reminding me of the dog strangler grape!
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Alain Brumont Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Torus France, Southwest France, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh
92 points
Deep golden yellow, the nose is dried pineapple, mango skin, Williams pear and honeysuckle.
The entry is clearly sweet with plenty of richness but offset with lively acidity. There is excellent intensity to the mid-palate, focus and penetration with a mirror-smooth texture, brightness and precision. The flavour continues its exotic journey with mango and pineapple. Long, winding finish.
