Sagrantino Day International
Rome, Piazza Colonna - Sala Angiolillo nella sede de Il Tempo
Tasted April 21, 2008 by Barbara B with 658 views
Introduction
Nice event with some familiar and unfamiliar producers. The best wines were from the wineries I had never heard of before; surprising to me, having visited Montefalco many times. The vintages presented were 2003, 2004 and anteprima 2005.
Flight 1 (12 notes)
Red
2003 Fattoria di Milziade Antano Montefalco Sagrantino
87 points
Fruit, spices and minerals; warm, smooth, full-bodied, big and easy.
Red
2004 Antonelli San Marco Montefalco Sagrantino
88 points
Medium body and elegant; alcohol listed as 15% but seemed lower. Quite nice.
Red
2003 Cantina Benincasa Montefalco Sagrantino
92 points
High level of astringent tannins from oak and grapes, but lovely lush fruit underneath. Big in everything; full bodied. Great but needs many years of bottle age.
Red
2005 Casale Rialto Montefalco Sagrantino Le Piergole
95 points
Anteprima tasting. Sweet/ripe fruit, smooth/powdery tannins; lovely. Outstanding expression of Sagrantino varietal character. Never heard of this producer before. It was the WOTN and the surprise of the night. 95
Red
2004 Cesarini Sartori - Signae Montefalco Sagrantino
90 points
Nice aromas and flavours of clean earth, dried roses and minerals. Just right tannins, acidity and alcohol.
Red
2003 Dionigi Montefalco Sagrantino
91 points
Dense, concentrated. Aromas and flavours of roses, tar, earth and minerals. Firm/ripe tannins.
Red
2003 Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino
83 points
Light, simple, easy styling. Not what one expects from a Sagrantino.
Red
2005 Lungarotti Montefalco Sagrantino
79 points
No varietal character in appearance, smell or taste. Clear; low acidity, high tannins, out of balance, light body, short and simple.
Red
Red
2004 Napolini Mario Montefalco Sagrantino
83 points
Ruby, clear. Light in everything. No richness or savouriness, but graceful in a non-Sagrantino way.
Red
2004 Perticaia Montefalco Sagrantino
80 points
Nothing special. Lacking complexity and short on the finish. Why? I expected more from this wine from having tried previous vintages.

2004 Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Sagrantino

Complex nose and palate of fruit, earth and minerals; smooth, rich and savoury; big bodied yet elegant.
