The Last Dinner at Dinner

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Tasted November 16, 2022 by Papies with 126 views

Introduction

Promising return to an old favorite and now 2 Star Michellin that ended up badly when they served a good part of our wine that we BYOB at corkage to another table...
The food is good but everything felt a bit dated and commercialized for a hotel.

Flight 1 - To Start (1 note)

Red
2018 Meyer-Näkel Walporzheimer Kräuterberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
91 points
Very much Burgundian ( Maybe the global warming is helping here...) but with also an extra dollop of spicy , juicy frit. A bit like a modern cousin of burgundy or a Burgundian wine that went on holidays to the us for a bit. Young still and with lots of capacity to age and we would definitely love to cross paths with it in the future to see the evolution. A solid 91-92 for now for us but we ar enot the obvious crowd for this style of Pinot.

Flight 2 - The wine they served (1 note)

Red
2014 Domaine Maume-Marchand-Tawse Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
Served blind and by accident to us instead of our wine and was thus a proper surprise.
The wine is very much a fresh pinot and at times we almost felt it was a Rhone valley wine. Soft smoky. soft spice, bright and energetic wine and with hindsight a textbook Gevrey. Soft earthy finish. Good 91 and with good life ahead. Not a bad accident after all.

Flight 3 - Our wine (1 note)

Red
1994 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Our third time with this wine over the last 10 years or so and definitely the wine is on the way down. At first we really liked it when it was younger and brighter and could hold the a bit overripe fruit. Back then was a 96 now is a 93 at best as the lack of freshness post the evolution just highlights that the winemaker lost control of it and now its paying the price. Its not porty or burnt but lacks elegance and beauty that one would expect from this level of pedigree. The 1996 for example that we tried recently that comes from a less ripe year was an exceptional 97 from us . This 1994 is at best 93 and better drink now.

Flight 4 - A poor and patronizing apology. (2 notes)

Red
1998 Château Bahans Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
By the glass ( Coravin Bottle) at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal as an apology for mixing our wine with another table. A poor apology as such.
The wine felt burnt and soft porty almost like the ripeness was out of control , almost overdone in its youth. Poor wine and poorer than their apology.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2012 Château Suduiraut Castelnau de Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points

A decent and generic level of sauternes and in no way memorable. Good in a way for what it is but a far cry from a top end wine or a decent apology.
