Introduction

Prior to the main event and also afterwards we tasted a few other wines from the WSET lecture and some interesting sweeter wines

Flight 1 - Flight of Whites and reds - no particular order (3 notes)

White
2018 Biecher & Schaal Riesling Schoenenbourg Gypse France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
91 points
Fresh, intense nose with lime and lemon blossom, mineral, desiccated almond and lemon leaf.
Very intense, the entry shows incisive acidity, clarity, poise, and flavours of wet earthy, lemon leaf and some white plum. An elegant, attractive wine, some richness to the mid-palate is offset by racy, delineated acidity and finishing with a bitter lemon pithiness. Very long and firm as the wine opens further.
White
2018 Urbina Rioja Blanco Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
87 points
Deep golden yellow in colour the aromas is wood resin, lemon, oatmeal, starfruit(?) and button mushroom. Lifted and focused, the entry is linear with a crisp persistent acidity, linear palate shape and a long, winding farewell. A creamy aspect adds complexity and an oily peach skin texture to the mid-palate. Not much depth; this is showing nicely.
Red
2017 Bodegas Beronia Mazuelo Rioja Reserva Colección Beronia Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
91 points
Deep red, the wine shows aromas of fresh spices, and American oak notes yet plenty of red plum, blackcurrant, mulled spices and an intense tobacco element.
The ripe entry is soft and intense with more tobacco, a rich, velvety texture and lively acidity. The open-knit style of Rioja has bags of cigar box and macerated red cherry fruit along with dried orange peel smeared in dark chocolate with a long winding finish. Works well, although later I detected a smidgeon of cork taint but it didn’t seem to affect it vastly.
