Introduction

A focus on Meursault 1er Cru through the lens of Genevrieres and Perrieres

Flight 1 - One Producer, 1 Perrieres and 2 Genevrieres, 2 vintages (3 notes)

Deep intense wine filled with ripe nectarine and peach, smoke, oatmeal and spices.
Medium bodied, with a fine bead of acidity, touch mineral giving a spine, broad mid-palate and well balanced. Richly textured, this is a fatter style that manages to avoid being too plump. Fairly long wine, and the flavours show rind cheese, stone fruits and a citric edge. Good Meursault example.

Mid-yellow in colour, the aromas are wild fennel, green apple, mineral, tarragon and crushed rocks.
A firm, racy wine with carrot tops, dill and chopped sprouts; finely delineated and interwoven is some spice, oatmeal and crushed rocks. Very mineral-led, there is a touch of citrus and apple fruit to the core, but the length tapers off. Delicate, and a little horizontal.

Medium yellow in colour; the nose is light mineral, crushed rocks, chalk and wet river stones with a little tarragon herb. Restrained on the nose and entry, this Meursault is a poised, clean and pristine example with chiselled acidity. Bright with some herbs and more delicate blossom, there is a good depth of flavour and a long finish. A tightly wound wine with a steely, racy spine of acidity and a pithy finish. Right up my street.

Yves Boyer-Martenot Meursault from 2 vineyards

Medium yellow in colour, there is a herbal and vegetal note with steel bar and mineral - a touch of yellow flowers. Arguably quite shy the palate entry is richer with oatmeal to sweetcorn notes, fresh butter, green apple skin rub with flavours of beeswax, fresh bread, nut granola and honey. Rather broad mid-palate there is a phenolic note on the finish - like sucking a pebble. A slightly evolved back palate shows some rare marzipan for this young wine; lively acid.

Deep yellow showing some development with button mushroom, ripe nectarine and caramel. Quite an intense nose; plenty of rich, ripe fruit played off with a fabulous racy acidity. The wine seems to have a brittle texture, the oak is present but not that integrated, whilst there is some crushed stone and stone fruit all in the mix. Overlaying this is a savoury, very gently spicy note (warming and spicy on the finish). The wine hasn't much mid-palate depth and has a coarseness feeling somewhat disjointed, but overall, despite its youthful narrative seems to be weary already?

Pierre Yves Colin Morey Meursault from 2 vineyards

Pale yellow, the nose is youthful with mineral, chalky, crushed stones, and damp earth and mushroom.
A bright entry with vivad, energetic acidity (suggesting 2007/2008) filled with pumice rock, oyster shell, mineral, chalk, smoked lemon, lime zest and apple. There is the width on the mid-palate of this classy, delicate wine that sits upright with poise. A tight, razer-sharp wine that has plenty to offer made in that sleek, mineral style. Long finish, integrated oak and starting to show complexity with excellent concentration.

Light yellow in colour, this Meursault shows yellow flowers, Galia melon, mineral and crushed rocks and a hint of reduction (some SO2?). Subtle entry, the acidity is racy and mineral-tinged, and steely. Layers of complexity from an oatmeal texture, crushed stones and quarry dust notes to flavours of apple slices, lemon zest and smoked white grapefruit and integrated oak spices. A finely boned, porcelain frame the texture is amazing and I love its freshness and dynamism that persists to a long farewell. Outstanding!

From the lower area of Perrieres the wine has a light to medium yellow colour; ripe, lifted aromas of citrus, elderflower, apple, grapefruit and vanilla pod.
Fairly rich entry filled with ripe apple slices, almost red apple with oak spices, wet chalk and washed river stones underpinned by a firm, racy acidity to give precision and direction. Fairly broad in the mid-palate, this is a smart Meursault. A charming, youthful wine a long finish that shows more oak spices, mineral, apple and a touch of Bircher muesli.
