Introduction

Went for supper with the guys that I taste at jan's sessions. Theme was magnums or (for those that didn't have any) two identical bottles.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
2011 Deviation Road Chardonnay Beltana Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Citrus, lemon, cream soda, citrus is quite sharp on the palate, crisp mousse, a little candy floss flavour but bone dry, touch of peel bitterness on the finish. Meh.
White
2018 Jérémy Arnaud Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
From magnum. Struck match and smoked bacon fat dominate the nose, a little muted citrus but the reductive notes are in charge here. Sourly juicy citric notes, woody texture and that reductive note translates with an equal dominance on the palate. Far too young. I wonder if it will ever settle down.
White
2018 Guilhem et Jean-Hugues Goisot Saint-Bris Corps de Garde France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Saint-Bris
Aromatic with notes of lychee, slight honey, apple. Pretty soft, a little lychee, a little apple, a little leesy textured. Okay.
White
2021 Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
From magnum. Pretty, perfumed, a little sweet gooseberry. Juicy, perfumed, a touch of citrus joins the gooseberry, clean, generous, simple but enjoyable and wonderfully fresh. Yum.
Red
1989 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
From magnum. Touch maderised, earthy, sous bois, mushroom, slight red over black fruit. Juicy acidity, leather, cigar box, textured tight tannins persists long, lightly rumbling beneath the tertiary flavours, still has a slightly fleshy quality but past its best.
White
2018 Domaine des Marnes Blanches Savagnin Côtes du Jura Les Molates France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Waxy, citrus, a little minerality, touch of citrus. Medium plus intensity acidity, lemon, textured burr is coarse, a little alcohol warmth on the finish. <shrugs>
Red
1994 Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
From magnum. Initial aromas are herbaceous; mint over eucalyptus, then ripe blackcurrant, a little leather and earth, a little cedar and sweet spice. Juicy, eucalyptus, alcohol warmth, tight tannins are drying but softly textured, blackcurrant is slight sour on the palate - perhaps a little too much tartaric? Hmm.
Red
2002 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri Australia, South Australia
From magnum. Concentrated black fruits, a little almost tar, savoury spice, very slightly reductive notes lends a rubbery quality, slight pepper. Medium plus intensity acidity, tight wood and grape skin tannins, alcohol warmth is non intrusive, black hued fruits prove to be in the berry space, quite concentrated, still showing young and, perhaps, a little disjointed.
And this does improve over the night showing more blackberry, toast and sweet spice and the tannins a little more harmony with regard to the whole.

Red
2008 Clarendon Hills Syrah Piggott Range Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
From magnum. Concentrated black fruits, caramel oak and sweet spice. Very primary nose. And so it proves on the palate, big bold blackberry, caramel oak, tightly textured grippy tannins, this is showing very young but is balanced. Needs more time.
Red
2003 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
From magnum. Herbaceous; a little mint and almost a touch of dill, sweet spice, blackcurrant, slightly earthy and a tiny smidge of salinity. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy blackcurrant, chalky tannins travel long, with time the fruit gets a little more red hued and is joined by more earthy and leathery notes. Quite fresh and fleshy. Nice.

Closing

Interesting tasting and supper...The Haut Bailly was out of condition but worked with the Steak Tartare. The Mellot showed simple but lovely and fresh. The rest showed either pleasant, too young (the Chablis was, for me, practically undrinkable) or a little out of whack (St Henri, Xanadu) or just plain indifferent...
