Introduction

Thought I'd have another go at this semi-entry level tasting experience...

Flight 1 (50 notes)

White
2022 Erin Eyes Steve Wiblin's Pride of Erin Reserve Riesling Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
lime and green apple, sulphur, a little candy floss. Bone dry, green and lime are reserved on the palate, simple, tangy, a little texture, sulphur. Nice
White
2016 Peter Lehmann Riesling Wigan Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Lime cordial with a little candied lime underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, lime and lime pith, very slight bitterness, old school Aussie gets a meh from me.
White
2021 First Creek Wines Sémillon Winemaker's Reserve Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of green apple, cut grass, a touch of minerality. Clean, Simple, nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, quite green and lean on the palate, a little kaffir lime leaf note here as well. <shrugs>
White
2022 Sam Trimboli Vermentino Saverio Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers
green hued fruit; greengages with a little orchard fruit and candy floss. The palate is a reflection of the nose. Clean. Short. Meh
White
2022 Sidewood Estate Sauvignon Blanc Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Gooseberry tends to cats pee, a little unripe passion fruit and a touch of oyster shell in support. Medium plus intensity acidity and a touch of residual sugar puts this in the sweet and sour space. Nah
White
2021 Coriole Chenin Blanc Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Low intensity aromas shows a little citrus. Sharp acid and alcohol warmth, bitterness on the palate with a touch of textured on the finish. Nope.
White
2018 Clairault Cellar Release Barrel Selection White Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Floral top notes, apple and stone fruit, peachy, a little sweet spice and vanilla. Tangy with a little bitter melon on the palate and a smidge of alcohol warmth. Hmm
White
2020 Terre à Terre Sauvignon Blanc Crayeres Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Wrattonbully
Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, very slight gooseberry and green capsicum. Medium plus intensity acidity is a little sour, drying, woody burr, sweet and sour fruit, Nah.
White
2022 Colours of the South Pinot Gris Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Pear and rock melon; fruit forward nose. a little citrus underpin showing a smidge of lemon joins these fruits on the palate. Simple, okay.
White
2022 Tulloch Verdelho Vineyard Selection Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas show slightly green notes; touch of green apple, floral top notes, tangy textured burr on the mid palate, very slightly sour, orchard fruit simple, slightly out of whack. Meh.
White
2020 Santolin Wines Arneis Cosa Nostra Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Ooh, a little struck match reductiveness over muted stone fruit. Tangy, juicy, a little fleshy. Stone fruit notes more resent on the palate, less obviously reductive. Okay.
White
2015 Tahbilk Marsanne 1927 Vines Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Nagambie Lakes
I don't remember this being so briny in the past, a little stone fruit, apple and waxy notes here as well. On the palate there is a little green note which lends freshness, waxy texture coats the mouth, tangy, briny. It's rather nice
White
2021 Russell & Suitor Chardonnay Cazadora Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River
Quite struck match on the nose, a little non delineated fruit beneath this. Juicy, tangy, drying textured, muted fruit hides behind that struck match note. Meh.
White
2021 Silkman Wines Chardonnay Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin
Peach and white fig over bacon fat, slightly citric underpin. In the mouth it's quite savoury and tight with bacon fat taking precedence at the expense of the fruit. Nope.
White
2017 Chapman Grove Chardonnay Reserve Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
struck match, fresh herbs; almost a little thyme, peach and nectarine with slightly seaside notes. Medium plus intensity acidity is integrated, tangy fruit, fleshy, that saline note is here as well. Nice
White
2017 Petaluma Chardonnay Tiers Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Piccadilly Valley
A rather charming hazelnut note, struck match, sweet spice. Juicy, the struck match note rather dominates the palate, stone fruit and sweet spice beneath this…sigh
White
2019 Whicher Ridge Viognier Mademoiselle V Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe
Medium minus intensity aromas show muted cream, a little apricot, marzipan. Juicy tending to medium plus intensity acidity, bitter attack then muted fruit showing some residual sugar. Nope
Rosé
2022 Nick Spencer Rosé Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Gundagai
Jubey strawberry, red berries, a little rose water. Juicy, touch of residual sugar, red berries…not for me.
Rosé
2022 Howard Vineyard Picnic Rose Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Red berry, a little savoury underpin but, on the palate, it's a jubey, residual sugar driven slop box. How sad. Nope.
Red
2021 Aylesbury Estate Gamay Q05 Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe Ferguson Valley
Creamy, buttery, cherry pretty jubey fruit with a little savoury almost peppery spice. A little on the rich side in the mouth, cherry fruit, touch of bitterness, textured burr is drying. Okay.
Red
2021 Puppet Master Pinot Noir Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Great Southern
Low intensity aromas show tiny cherry notes and little else. Quite bitter on the palate with little else worthy of mention. Nah.
Red
2021 Hardys Pinot Noir HRB D697 Australia
Struck match reductiveness, black hued fruits; berries and brambles. It's a little sour on the palate with plenty of textured grip the fruit is a touch muted. <shrugs>
Red
2021 Bay of Fires Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
Again struck match reductiveness over savoury black fruits showing predominantly cherry and plum. Sourly juicy acidity lends the fruit a more red hued quality on the palate, wetly dilute, textured burr. Meh
Red
2021 Schwarz Wine Company Grenache Thiele Road Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
baked strawberry with raspberry jam underpin, a touch of sweet spice. Juicy and jammy on the palate with talc textured tannins and what feels like a smidge of residual sugar that is just about kept in check. Okay.
Red
2020 Dandelion Vineyards Grenache Faraway Tree Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
A little jammy fruit, chocolate, sweet spice, with time and agitation it also shows some blackcurrant cordial notes. Clumsily adjusted acidity lends sharpness and pushes a more red currant note that clashes with the jammy tones. Talc textured tannins. Meh

Red
2021 Coulter Wines Sangiovese C² Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Cherry, a little earthy underpin and a touch of ripe herbs/tobacco leaf. Medium plus intensity acidity, non-delineated fruit on the palate, slightly chalky textured tight drying tannins, medium plus length with a little alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm
Red
2021 House of Certain Views Tempranillo Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich
Slight jammy red and black fruits, a little oaky underpin. Slightly jammy fruit on the palate, drying textured burr is a little silky, it is a bit out of whack for me. Hmm.
Red
2021 Serafino Barbera Bellissimo Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Savoury cherry, a little meaty underpin, perhaps a tiny red currant note. Sourly juicy, quite dense on the mid palate with a little coarse flour textured tannins, finishes on the bitter side…perhaps a little too much extraction?
Red
2021 Mercer Wines Montepulciano Rosso Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges
Cherry, blackcurrant, liquorice, sweet spice, cedar, tiny smidge of plain chocolate. Nice nose. Juicy red over black hued fruit, drying slightly woody chalky textured tannic grip, fruit doesn't quite present after the promise of the nose, finishes with some non-intrusive alcohol warmth.
Red
2020 Clarence Hill Grenache - Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Adelaide
Jammy red fruit, a little bitter plum and blackberry in the background, sweet spice from oak. Juicy, muted fruit is present but the impression is slightly sour and bitter, tannic burr is drying, quite short. Nah.
Red
2021 De Bortoli Vinoque Novo Tinto Australia, Victoria, North East, King Valley
Initially a little struck match reductive under this some fresh black hued fruits In the mouth it's juicy with the fresh black fruits quite quickly overtaken by rather drying though softly textured tannins. Hmm.
Red
2021 Tarrawarra Merlot K Block Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Red plums, fruit tea, slightly resinous notes, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity with that red plum note and quite a bitter element here as well. It's not very nice.
Red
2021 Drop Zone Malbec Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu
Ripe fresh black plums with a little savoury underpin, sweet spice. Juicy tending to medium plus intensity acidity lends a little sourness to the plummy fruit, a sense of diluteness here as well. Slight chalky tannins are drying, the fruit just about persists. Okay.
Red
2021 Andrew Thomas Wines Shiraz Synergy Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
On the nose there is a slightly anonymous melange of non-delineated black fruits backed by oaky sweet spice and cream. In the mouth it has slight sour and savoury black fruits, drying coarsely textured tannins, a touch of alcohol warmth. Meh.
Red
2021 Pietro Nero d'Avola Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu
Plummy, rich and ripe, a little red fruit (raspberry) underpin. In the mouth it is refreshingly juicy, the plums fresh and a little wild, a touch of bitterness, tannins are grippy and drying though talc textured. Simple and okay.
Red
2020 Robert Oatley Shiraz Signature Series Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Slightly jammy black fruits show berry and plums, sweet spice with more of the same on the palate supported by talc textured tannic burr. It's all a bit 'whatever' for me.
Red
2019 Rosenvale Estate Shiraz Old Vines Reserve Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Ripe blackberry, sweet spice, a little plum, vanilla in support. Juicy with a touch of savoury concentration to the fruit, drying floury textured tannic grip, alcohol helps create the impression of body. Balanced though. Okay
Red
2017 Blue Pyrenees Estate Shiraz Richardson Reserve Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Pyrenees
Ripe black fruits cream, vanilla caramel, sweet spice. Old school nose. Juicy with expensive oak, fruit tending to the Porty on the palate, a little fig, fruit bomb, slightly out of whack but it is what it is
Red
2021 Leconfield Cabernet Franc Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Ripe, slightly jammy , blackcurrant with pencil shavings and pyrazine notes and a little baking spice. Juicy tending t medium plus intensity acidity, flavour profile as per the nose, slightly grainy tannic underpin. There is a bit of alcohol warmth on the finish that makes things a little smudgy. Hmm.
Red
2020 Peos Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Four Kings Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Manjimup
Herbaceous notes, a little smokiness, blackcurrant. Juicy, savoury, dark hued fruits, a little plain chocolate here as well as drying slightly chalky tannins. Simple but nice.
Red
2017 Fermoy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Muted blackcurrant with a touch of cassis and a smidge of mint & eucalyptus. Juicy with a slightly soft impression, black currant, slight alcohol warmth, tannins are floury textured, persistent. Hmm.
Red
2017 Victory Point Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Ripe blackcurrant, a little chocolate, cream, sweet spice, polished oak…Medium plus intensity acidity feels a touch adjusted pushing the frit to a more red spectrum, chalky tannins, finishes slight bitter joined by a touch of alcohol warmth.
Red
2020 Driftwood Estate Winery Petit Verdot Artifacts Meritage Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Red and black plums, sweet spice, a little coffee note. Juicy medium plus intensity acidity, red over black plums then a fairly hefty chewy lump of tannins dries out the palate. Interesting but probably of more use as a blending component
Red
2021 Alejandro (Alex Russell Wines) Saperavi Australia, South Australia, Lower Murray, Riverland
Meaty, savoury, gamey black fruits, a little Parma violet, plums beneath this. Medium plus intensity acidity, finely textured cats tongue tannins fruit more red hued on the palate, long. Interesting. Nice.
White - Fortified
N.V. Patritti Chardonnay Rare Old Fortified Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
a little toffee apple, fig, dried peaches and apricots on the nose. Lusciously sweet but with a tiny touch of woody bitterness to accompany figs, raisins and a little toast & biscuit. It's surprisingly simple for a minimum 15 year old fortified.
Red - Fortified
N.V. McWilliam's Family Reserve 10 Year Old Tawny Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers, Riverina
Figs, dried figs and walnuts with caramel tending to toffee, muscovado sugar. Medium plus intensity acidity and alcohol help with the impression of juiciness but this is lusciously sweet, a little coffee joins the figs and dried figs, walnuts and baked sugar notes. A little simple and lightweight fruit wise but this is balanced and perfectly pleasant.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Swings & Roundabouts Sparkling Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
A little lemon, candy floss, tiny touch of bread yeast…bit frothy mousse, jubey fruit, touch of residual sugar, short. Hmm
White - Sparkling
2018 Taltarni Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Australia, Victoria
Green apple, lemon lozenges, tiny smidge of almost grapefruit. Crisp mousse, leesy textured bur, a little biscuit and a touch of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Hmm.
White - Sparkling
2018 Hungerford Hill Dalliance Sparkling Australia, New South Wales
Touch of almost castor oil is slightly odd and off-putting, yeasty underpin. Aggressive and coarse mousse, the palate reflects the nose. Ugh
White - Sparkling
N.V. Sidewood Estate Sparkling Pinot Noir Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Slightly dirty smelling, smidge of red cherry and candy gloss. Aggressive though finely textured mousse, touch of mid palate burr but it's quite muted and a little anonymous. Meh.
