Introduction

Donald got in touch when he realised he would be in Sydney and we co-ordinated to catch up for a cheeky rapid (I had to be back for a 3pm meeting annoyingly) lunch. He offered to shout lunch so I grabbed a few bottles and the Coravin

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
From Coravin. Aromas of butter, a little toffee almost, touch of lemon, also some marzipan, almond and honey as well on the nose. In the mouth it's rich but still has a quite sharp acid line that the citric fruit hangs off. Surprisingly splendid with oysters.

Red
2021 Gentle Folk Pinot Noir Scary Gully Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
From Coravin. Lightweight aromas show wild ferment, whole bunch prettiness, red fruit spectrum…simple. Quite nimble on the palate, fresh acidity, red hued fruits - berries, cherries - but quite wild fruit. Negligible tannins. Pleasant

Red
2010 Franck Balthazar Cornas Cuvée Casimir Balthazar France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
From Coravin. Green and black peppercorns, black and blue berry fruit, a little savoury, earthy, rocky minerality here as well. In the mouth it's fresh, juicy and fleshy, flavour profile is as per the nose with some tertiary mushroom notes as well, fine textured tannic burr. Nice

Red
2004 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia
From Coravin. Quite reticent initially with touches of clumsily adjusted acidity but opens to show ripe black fruit - blackberry and plum with a hint of raisin, plenty of sweet spice and a little caramel and vanilla. A little tannic burr. Hmm.

Red
2001 Vasse Felix Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
From Coravin. Like the Bin 389 this is initially quite reticent and shows clumsy acidity adjustment as well as plenty of Eucalyptus, mint and green capsicum. And, again like the Bin 389, it does open with time to show ripe blackcurrant, touches of cassis to join the more herbaceous notes, plenty of tannic grip which proves chalky and slightly woody. Towards the end of the glass I start to see a bit of almost cork taint which is a concern.

Closing

I had a lovely, albeit short, time with Donald...Standard buyers regret as I found myself wishing that I'd brought along another half dozen wines but time was against us...
