Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)

Introduction

This was just a little excuse to drink wine and watch the Super Bowl. Got my dad up here to see Gary and Robert for first time since Fall fishing ended. The commercials were weak, the game was good until the refs had to put their stamp on it and tainted the outcome. More importantly, we had some pretty darn good wines to go with a nice spread of food. A good day!

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Champagne Pierre Legras Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs "Idée de Voyage" France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
93 points
Pale gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. First of my bottles and very typical of what we've experienced before. These are quite bright, showing some fresh sea air, pear, creamy textured, orchard fruits, fine minerals and patisserie with perfect balance. Very enjoyable. 93+pts.

2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Light golden color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. 80% Rousanne and 20% mix other allowed grapes. This has an intoxicating nose of stone fruits with peach and lychee; very complex, followed by pear, green apple, flowers, vivid wet river rock, citrus zest, lightly tropical with phases of fusil on pouring and repouring. The palate strikes me as medium-full bodied bordering on full bodied, it has some lift though it is deep, layered and spicy, with golden fruits and undertones of tropical fruit with an oily texture. The palate also adds in dried herbs, orange peel, and pepper with a suggestion of Grand Marnier on the slightly aggressive finish. There's a lot going on here for sure. I love this nose and the palate is not far behind. We had this at Beaucastel a few years ago and I think the palate was a little smoother than it was today, but that is being somewhat petty. A really fun wine, and always a treat - thanks Robert.

2011 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Medium-dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses plus over 3 hours. I'm baffled by the seeming lack of love for this wine. This just has a killer Oregon pinot noir nose. Gorgeous red fruits burst from the glass, red raspberry, wild strawberry and cranberry, potpourri, earthy and damp with so much floral intensity and citrus infusion. The palate delivers with bright, tangy red fruits, strawberry-rhubarb, raspberry, earth and soil on a pure and refined medium bodied frame. This should go for some time with the cool red fruits and acidity. May improve a bit, should drink for 7 to 10 years. 93+ to 94pts.

Red
2013 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Original Vines USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
93 points
Medium red color with a 7mm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass plus over 3 hours. Deep red fruits on the nose, a bit sappy and ripe, a little earthy, and less defined than the palate. The palate is impressive, showing the Eyrie elegant hand, tame tannins, red berries and bing cherry, notable earth and forest notes here with modest tannins and good length. 92+ to 93pts.

2006 Fattoria Le Pupille (Elisabetta Geppetti) Saffredi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark red color with a 4mm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. A blend of 55% Cab, 40% Merlot and 5% Syrah. The nose just wafts up at you on pouring, very aromatic, cedar box, menthol, creme de cassis, perfumed, rock and charcoal. The palate is wonderful too; juicy blackberry, huckleberry, boysenberry, menthol, red cherry, damp earth with deep minerality and crushed rocks, dried wood, charcoal and some still somewhat firm tannins that despite the age gives this a youthful feel.
