Introduction
It was lovely to attend a tasting at teeny Dig - my first there since Covid. Dig always has excellent lineups. It’s been a few years since pricing squeezed me out of regular Leflaive buying but I was quite curious how well the ‘lesser’ wines stood up to the Bourgogne Blanc and the Puligny village - wines I’d adored in the past. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The Macon-Verzé wines were among my favorites of the day, though I found all the wines beautifully delicate (though not weak), penetrating examples of white Burgs. I broke down and bought a BB for old time’s sake (the M-Vs were sold out) but I will go hunting to see if I can find these others at reasonable prices.
Flight 1 (6 notes)
White
2020 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé
France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Verzé
I found this to be a surprising charmer. Bright, mid weight, pear/apple/lemon inflected with good balance and a saline hit on the tart finish. Really appealing delicate Chardonnay. Others were concerned with wood notes, but I didn’t notice any. Worthy, even very good.
White
2020 Domaine Leflaive Pouilly-Fuissé
France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
Quite different from the Macon-Verzé wines, with some buttery notes on the nose and and almost Meursault-like nutty note on the palate. Still didn’t have quite the charm of the other wines.
White
2020 Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc
France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Really reminded me of past Leflaive BBs. Light to mid weight but elegantly balanced, with surprising depth. All lemony, with a fine saline finish. Perhaps a little closed but showing enough now to enjoy. I’ll hold my wine bottle for a couple of years.
White
2020 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
The most closed of today’s lineup. I can’t rate it any higher because I don’t think it was ‘better’ than the BB, despite vigorous swirling. Similar profile, with a bit more dry extract and density which seemed to promise a brighter future.
