Dinner at Min Jiang

Introduction

My first time at Min Jiang for a 10 hands menu by retired Cantonese chefs. Loved the delicacy of the dishes, many of which are rarely seen anymore because of their time-consuming nature.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
2016 William Saintot Champagne Premier Cru La Tortelue France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

100% PN, which was surprising because of the citrus nature and precision of the wine. Loved the intensity and freshness, together with the sharp, focused fruit. Another great discovery.
White
2020 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
80 points
Thought this was an obnoxiously oaked Burgundy from a warmer vintage like 2018. Heavy scent of vanilla, the oak use and alcohol levels were both excessive. A horrible caricature of a rich, buttery Chardonnay.
White
2010 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Large-scaled with a waxy texture so agreed with someone else who guessed Chenin. Some honey notes which suggested that the wine was afflicted by botrytis. Lacked the energy that I like in Chardonnays.
White
2013 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Achleithen Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

My contribution. Some petroleum on the nose. Unctuous, dense texture but was well-balanced by the intense, stony fruit from a more classic vintage. Lovely acidity and length.
White
2017 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco Cuvée delle Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

Wow was convinced that this was a Burgundy. Definitely a maker who was trying to mimic such a style with all markers of a good Chardonnay - well-judged oak use and reduction, with sharp citrus fruit and tension. A pleasant discovery.
Red
2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
88 points
Had a distracting mint toothpaste note on the nose with a hint of five spice. Palate was more restrained with cranberry, cherry fruit that wasn't too sweet, but still was clearly a ripe new-world Pinot.
Red
2013 Felton Road Pinot Noir Block 3 New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
86 points
Typical new-world Pinot with tart but sweet red cherry fruit that was slightly confected. Not a fan.
Red
2016 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes Domaine Gagey France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
87 points
Had a distinct sweet kirsch note on the nose, with some mint toothpaste similar to the Selyem. Thought this was a Burgundy from a warm vintage like 2018 with the candied fruit on the palate. Needs more time to settle down.
Red
2010 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
91 points
Floral, perfumed nose. Elegant, cool dark red fruit with some spice on the palate, thought this was a CdB from the slightly rustic and coarse tannins. Had the aristocratic vibe of a good maker.
Red
2017 Antonin Guyon Corton-Clos du Roy France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
90 points
Slightly closed at the moment so thought this was from a more structured vintage like 2016. Made in a fuller-bodied, riper style. Tasted of potential rather than pleasure now.
