Sangiovese tasting at Malborghetto (Lecchi in Chianti - SI)

Tasted May 7, 2023 by marco_graz with 88 views

Introduction

Like last year we met in Tuscany to drink our beloved wines. This time we diceded to get together what we thought would be similarl style wines, 2 from Montalcino and 2 from Chianti area. We definitely got surprises!

Flight 1 - Montalcino (2 notes)

In this first flight there was quite a age difference but we thought Biondi Santi would be a young and powerful wine, instead we found a wine with great finesse that is actually ready to drink and evolved thoguhtout the 3 hours of the tasting, compared to a quite yound Pietroso.

👀 Of a beautiful light purple color with garnet nail.
👃 Beatiful nose of sweet orange, spices, dark berries, earthy, complex and continuously evolving over the 3 hours of our lunch.
👅 "Finesse" is the key word here. Great balance between velvety tannins and a high acidity, impactful mouth, medium bodied, and very elegant.
🏁 Incredibly long and pleasant finish, calling for another sip.

👀 Intense cherry red color with a little garnet nail.
👃 Very beautiful nose of red fruits, spices, earthy and balsamic, with a little Montalcino sweetness where the Sangiovese is more dense and powerful than Chianti Classico area..
👅 On the palate it's full bodied and intense with tannins that are maybe a little young but to be soon perfect to drink, and fresh acidity to complete a great wine.
🏁 The finish is long and satisfying.

Flight 2 - Chianti (2 notes)

This flight was the clash between the two faces of traditional Chianti wines. On one side the power and youth of Cepparello and on the other side the light and elegant Castell'in Villa. In my opinion this one time Cepparello was showing off better than Castell'in Villa, even if very young.

👀 Dark but lively red color.
👃 At the nose some darker fruit than the other Sangiovese we had, but not mature or sweet, leather, earthy too.
👅 On the palate it's very energetic, a little sour, fresh, enveloping the mouth with the intense taste. Very beautiful firm tannins and with a great acidity.
🏁 Very long and pleasant finish.
Unlike the other users, I think this can calmly go until 2040..it is extremely young now and shows no signs of giving up the age.

👀 Medium cherry red color with a little garnet nail.
👃 Very Chianti style nose, with orange and blood, earthy and elegant, very often changing in the glass.
👅 On the palate the lighter body of the four but very elegant and full of complexity.
🏁 Another long finish.

Closing

Incredible tasting of Sangiovese wine with a clear winner but few second wines. We all loved the class of Biondi Santi, but I preferred Cepparello to the Castell'in Villa or Pietroso (which was in my opinion the last, even if very good wine)
