Introduction

Great oppportunity to taste some older single vineyard Barbarescos as well as a preview of the '05 vintage

Flight 1 - 1st Course (1 note)

Seared House-Cured Salt Cod, Squash Vermicelli, Bagna Cauda Vinaigrette

White - Sparkling
N.V. Desiderio Jeio (Bisol) Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Brut Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

Nice and simple. Acted as a nice aperitif for the evening. Crisp green pear, nice acidity, adn a medium body. Didn't really analyze too much, however at the time it was very refreshing.

Flight 2 - 2nd Course (1 note)

Duo of Eggplant Rolantini, Tellegio, Fresh Mozzarella, Roast Pepper and Eggplant Sauce

Red
2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
88 points
Nice aromatics of dried cherries, spices, and a slight leathery quality. Nice acid up front with moderate tannins. Medium body with a somewhat elegant mouthfeel. Riper and simpler style than the Barbarescos, however I can see drinking a whole bunch of this. Food friendly too!

Flight 3 - 3rd Course (2 notes)

Barolo Braised Rabbit, Grilled Loins, Carrot Agnolotti, Natural Jus

Red
2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

A bit more serious and complex than the Lange Nebbiolo, but still has a solid fruit core of cherry, dried cranberry. Higher acidity level up front. The tannins are light and dusty, add to the mouthfeel, and cut through some of the food. Finishes with firm acidity and spicy berries. Food played a huge part in the enjoyment of this wine. Tried a week or so beforehand, and it was harsh. Definitely needs food, or 5+ years in bottle.

On par with the '04, however in a few years it might take a few more points home. Nice preview of the '05's. Kind of in a wierd stage right now. Simple with firm tannins, yet remaining an elegance underneath the acid and tannin. Sweet kirsch, red currants, and bitter chocolate. Seems a touch riper than the '04 as well. Will probably reach maturity a bit sooner as well. Good juice though.

Flight 4 - 4th Course (2 notes)

Wild Boar, Red Wine Risotto, Sugar Snap Peas

2001 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Huge step up from the regular Barbaresco bottlings. Much more stuffing and complexity going on. Still youthful, but showing nice dried cranberries, lavender, and warm spices on nose. The palate is explosive with intensity. Spices, earthiness, dried fruits, and leather. I love that there's a lot going on, and even with the firm tannins and acidity, there's an underlying elegance just waiting to emerge. This has a long life ahead.

WOTN. Everything about this is elegant. The nose is of market spice tea, baking spices, mushroom earthiness, and a touch of eucalypt. Still has a dusty tannic structure, but the fruit and secondary characteristics are so well balanced, it just sings. Long spicy finish throughout.

Flight 5 - 5th Course (1 note)

Cypress Grove Creamery's "Truffle Tremor", Mt. Townsend Creamery's "Trailhead Tomme", Poached Local Rhubarb

This one didn't do much for me. Angular, sharp, and overall not quite as balanced or complete as the Rio Sordo's. Luckily the food helped tone down the acids, the sour cherry component, and the awkward tannins. Otherwise this one would be hard to get by. Maybe its in a dumb stage of its life.

Amazing presentation. Great to taste some of the older wines. The '05's should be stunning!
