Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Cork was red to the end but no obvious damage. Nose, gravelly, after a while you get a hint of camp fire, bramble. On the palate - there's still a tautness here, like the tannins aren't fully resolved. Some freshness, even lightness but this doesn't seem fully happy in its skin. Over the course of a couple of hours it opens up but never starts to sing.

Red
1993 Château Carbonnieux France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Opened after a grander 99, this was a lovely surprise. A hint of tobacco leaf, damp garden shed on the nose, and a lovely gentle palate which slowly resolves into something quietly lovely. If you stuck your nose into the glass and sniffed you got the whole forest - if you have a bottle of this, it's drinking just lovely right now.
