Introduction

The monthly gathering of WIMPS at the wonderful La Trompette. This month Burgundy and what a line up what a meal.

Flight 1 - Canape (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. J.M. Gobillard et Fils Champagne Premier Cru Grande Réserve Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
A good start, bright yeasty, long. Not the focus today and was also lovely when i came back to it.

Flight 2 - Starter (3 notes)

White
2020 Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Bright with citrus honeysuckle and oak notes, still young but a real hit and great quality. Probably not the most interesting of the whites but the best with the meal.

White
2010 Domaine Dublère Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Deep straw colour, very resolved, perhaps more than you'd expect. Lots of autumn notes, reminds me of my garden atm. But depth and complexity
White
2008 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Meursault Clos de la Velle France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
deep straw colour. An aged white which is still held together by lovely acidity. For me the weakest of the three whites. Lovely to have these older Meursaults, but this needs drinking.

Flight 3 - Rabbit Boudin (3 notes)

Red
2011 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
youngest of this flight of Volnay and tastes it. Lots of fruit and complexity but more to come I think.
Red
1983 Prosper Maufoux Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Old wine, stewed fruit, cloudy . The prune note holds some interest and nice to try it at its end.

Red
2003 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
The wine of this flight. Seems light on its feet and top Volnay, smooth and giving, pretty red fruited quite sweet and tasty.

Flight 4 - Venison (4 notes)

Red
2003 Frederic Esmonin Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
This wine seems so complete. Lovely black fruit, spicy edge and seamless finish. Top burgundy

Red
2003 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
A lovely burgundy. Deep fruited and resolved, long finish. An acidic note runs through the wine. Today just behind the other two in this flight
Red
1999 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
complex and dark fruited, the tannic structure is still there making it great with the venison. Seems to open as meal progressed. Quite a statement. Just behind the Chambertin today. Robust but lovely.
Red
1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
A reserve wine generously opened.
A lifted nose, long palette, so different to the Gouges, softer more giving, red fruited and still some oak. A
very good wine which was I’d like to have more time with.
