Introduction

Wines are tasted double blind in flights, which are arranged randomly, but somewhat lighter to heavier. Each flight is discussed & unveiled before moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (4 notes)

Rosé
2021 Captûre Wines Rosé of Sangiovese USA, California, Sonoma County
91 points
Double blind. Pale color. Quite floral and pretty with citrus, cherry and white currant underneath. Flavors of rose water, currants and citrus with bright, lifted acidity. My favorite of the lineup.
Rosé
2021 Cenyth Cabernet Franc Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County
89 points
Double blind. Aromas of melon, florals and clay. Clay and red berry fruit on the palate. With air the floral elements seem to stand out a bit more. Good underlying acidity. Quite nice.
Rosé
2020 Saint Helena Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
flawed
Double blind, darkest of the first three. Simple bouquet of generic red berry fruit. Sour on the palate; weird and undrinkable.
Rosé
2020 Lewis Cellars Syrah Vin Gris USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Our host, being disappointed by the first three, pulled the cork on this wine and gave me a wink- no doubt as to what he was opening. Dark ruby color with notes of wild strawberry and spice. No doubt that this was a Lewis vin gris.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2008 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Blind. Dark fruit, plum and subtle herb and earth undertones. Full-bodied with medium tannins and flavors of macerated dark berry fruit and earth. Has a plushness to it. I am usually not a fan of Pomerols but this was quite good. Plenty of life left. This had been double decanted off its sediment 90 minutes before the flight was poured.
Red
2017 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Double blind. Vanilla, currant and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, with medium tannin and flavors of chocolate and black fruit. Balanced, with a nice finish. Guessed 2012 Napa cab sauv. (R&D)
Red
2017 Legacy Wines Petite Sirah USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
89 points
Double blind. Initially somewhat nondescript, this took some time in the glass to open. Black fruit dominates. (SS)
Red
2015 Spring Valley Vineyard Syrah Nina Lee USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Double blind. Black fruit, herb and earthy notes. Medium-bodied, with flavors of black fruit and chocolate. Lingering finish. Excellent. (J&L)
Red
2008 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Baconbrook USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
Blind. Currants, leather and lavender. Soft tannins. Abundant dark plummy fruit on the palate. Holding nicely.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2018 Caldwell Cabernet Franc Clone 214 USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville
90 points
Double blind. Juicy and perfumed, with black fruit and lifted floral notes. Flavors of black fruit and brown sugar with soft tannins. Very enjoyable, if not very franc-like. (SS)
Red
2015 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
Double blind. Aromas of black raspberry, herbs and currants. Full-bodied with a abundance of black fruit on the palate. Balanced and pure- easily my WOTF. Huge surprise to see a Bordeaux unveiled though- I think we all thought this was domestic- but still an excellent wine. (J&S)

Red
2012 Robert Craig Zinfandel USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
89 points
Double blind. Lighter color than other in the flight, with a nose of red berry fruit and spice. The palate mirrors the bouquet, picking up a subtle sourness as well. Good. (J&L)
Red
2018 Lewis Cellars Syrah USA, California, Napa Valley
Double blind. Opaque inky color. Abundant black fruit on the nose and palate. Spice, pepper, brown sugar and meaty elements. Firm. Guessed petite. (R&D)
Red
2017 Clos I Terrasses Priorat Laurel Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Double blind. Clay, dark berry fruit and herbs. Lush and velvety, with mixed red and black fruit, earth and herb qualities. Lingering finish. Excellent. (J&S)
