Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2018 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

A new producer to me, and I really enjoyed this bottle. Gentle red fruit and tea notes along with some oak-derived spice, knit together quite seamlessly. A lighter bodied style I suspect has a bit more upside still.

Surprisingly robust, and dare I say, fresh. A floral wine, nicely rounded, with pure black fruit, some iodine and a touch of cedar. The Cabernet Franc seems to win out over the Merlot. Fully resolved tannins. An outstanding showing after 25+ years.
Red
1988 Château Lafleur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A slightly affected bottle, not flawed but a bit volatile and suffering from some astringency that masked the fruit. Two prior bottles enjoyed in the past set a reasonable baseline that this failed to attain. It could have been mildly corked, but I didn't detect any tell-tale taint, so who knows. In any case, there was plenty to enjoy, with gentle black fruit alongside earthy and mineral notes, with a lengthy finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
A generous glass from a 750 opened the previous evening. Burnished orange in color, with evident viscosity. A muted nose showing hints of quince and marmalade. Spice and tropical fruit notes join on the palate, though the wine would benefit from more acidity to add a bit of tension. A very long finish.
