Euchre night

R&D's

Introduction

A few couples from the Saturday group gathered to play a few hands of euchre and pull a few corks in the process. We were long overdue as it had been fifteen months since our last euchre night, and a few of us were definitely out of practice.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 Guiborat Fils Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
88 points
Our final bottle. Lot 10613 disgorged 3/19/2013. Pale golden yellow color with a short mousse. Notes of almond, Gala apple and vanilla crème. The palate is slightly disappointing compared to the bouquet, showing pear and citrus fruit with hints of caramel and something metallic/tinny that’s just a bit distracting, though everyone else seemed to enjoy this a little more than me. If this is a representative bottle this is just a bit past its peak IMO- drink up.
White
2021 Knights Bridge Sauvignon Blanc Pont de Chevalier USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
90 points
A familiar label opened by our generous hosts. Pale color. Notes of grapefruit and lime with a subtle underlying grassiness. On the palate this is more rich than bright, but with abundant fruit that carries the finish. Delightful. (R&D)
White
2021 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Coconut and apple notes waft from the glass. With air there are hints of honeysuckle and apple. Medium-bodied with a soft hint of oak underneath coconut, apple and vanilla flavors. Lingering finish. (R&D)

2013 Turley Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

There's just a little bricking here, beginning to show some age which has softened some of the typical Turley ripeness. Aromas of fig paste and plum, with spice and pepper notes as well. There's just a hint of ripeness in the background, with something along the lines of a candied raisin quality. Medium-bodied, with flavors of raspberry and fresh figs. Medium finish. Nice. (R&D)

2008 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley

After a run of either flawed or disappointing bottles we have finally found a winner. Double decanted off its sediment about ninety minutes earlier. The bouquet shows black currant, plum, chocolate and leather aromas. Full-bodied with softened tannins and flavors of currants, plum and cedar. Coming back to it three hours after it was opened has brought out more of the cedar and chocolate notes but also hints of tobacco. The dark plummy fruit remains. Plush, mouth-filling texture. In a very nice place right now and should hold at this level for a while. We have three bottles remaining which I'll spread out and open through 2028.

2015 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Light color with an abundance of garrigue in the bouquet- there would be no doubt as to this wine's origins in a blind tasting. Cedar, white and red currants, and white pepper to go along with the garrigue. Medium-bodied with red berry fruit, garrigue and pine sap flavors. Soft tannins with balancing acidity and a lingering finish. Lovely, with no signs of fading. 92+ pts. (R&D)

2011 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Terres Brulees France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Youthful dark color with aromas of dark fruit and pepper with a terrific old world funk as well. Full-bodied. Medium tannins with flavors of black fruit, pepper and game. Drinking very well upon pop & pour, but gained weight as the night wore on. (R&S)

2019 Domaine Durand Cornas Empreintes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Dark color. Quite ripe with raisin and prune elements dominating the bouquet and palate. Pepper, game and tapenade qualities underneath the ripe fruit. There's a hint of bouillon as well. Full-bodied and slightly firm at this young stage. Peppery spice tones and ripe dark fruit linger in the finish. I do not care for the ripe pruney elements here and I worry they will become more dominant as this ages. (J&S)

2017 Switchback Ridge Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Deep inky color. An initial brown sugar note that I find in many TRB wines, along with an abundance of black fruit, plum and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm but fine tannins and flavors of black cherry, plum and chocolate. The fruit carries the oak nicely. (R&D)
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux Les deux Allées France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux
92 points
Half bottle. Light golden color with notes of pear liqueur, violet and apricot. Abundant fruit with bright acidity gives a freshness to the palate. Pear nectar and peach flavors with a nice finish. The acidity cut the richness of D's brownie cheesecake dessert. Chenin blanc makes such wonderful sweet wines. (R&D)
White - Sweet/Dessert
2011 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Apparently we needed yet another half bottle to extend the evening, but so it is when everyone is having a good time. Light youthful appearance with an abundance of stone fruit to go along with marmalade, honeysuckle, pineapple and mango qualities. The tropical qualities here are very nice. A lovely little Sauternes that is drinking well at this early stage. (R&D)
