Introduction

The wines were presented by the winemaker Uwe Schiefer - "from present to past" 2020-2005

Flight 1 - Reihburg 2017-2020 (3 notes)

Red
2020 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
92 points
This was the "starter" of the Reihburg verticale and we all were surprised, how open this bottle showed. Red berries, flowers and herbs on the nose. It reminds me on some of the 2020 left-side Bordeauxs at the arrivage-tasting. Acidity, minerality and even some complexity already there. Big promise for the future! 92++ pts. for the moment with potential for a few more points over the next 10 years.

2018 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
90 points
For me this one was the weakest of the Reihburg verticale. 2018 was very hot vintage, even the nights didn't bring any coolness to the grapes. This bottle is a reflection of the weather conditions. It shows hot and "brandy" aromas on the nose and on the palate. It's lacking the typical acidity and minerality of the Reihburg's. Fruit and complexity is overwhelmed by the heat and the sharpness. I don't think there is much hope for the future, but let's see...

2017 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland

2017 is a beautiful vintage for Burgenland and for Blaufränkisch grapes and this bottle is an evidence therefor. Showing very young, the nose opens after 6 hours of slow-ox. Oak is still present and will certainly integrate over the next years. Beautiful aromas of flowers and herbs on the nose, red berries in the foreground. The same on the palate. Salty minerality, long end. Beautiful wine at this stage but will improve over the next 5-10 years!
The 2017 version "r2" is slightly ahead of this one.

Flight 2 - Reihburg 2015-2017 (3 notes)

Red
2017 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Reihburg R2 Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
95 points
For me this is the WOTN! The 2017 vintage is known for its mix of hot days and cool nights- acidity, fruit, well integrated tannins come together.
Even if this wine is still a baby, the nose is very expressive and open. The oak is still present but will certainly integrate over the next 5-10 years. The acidity is also prominent but this is a very complex wine and a beauty even by now! Typical salty minerality on the mid-weight palate. Very long! Give it many hours or a day of air or keep it in cellar for the next 5-10 years!

2015 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
92 points
Dark, purple/red color, no signs of ageing. The nose shows some barnyard, that stays there even with a lot of air. Some violetts and red fruits on the nose and on the mid-weight-palate. Nothing to complain here but lacking a bit of complexity compaired to other Reihburg's in this verticale! Will certainly improve with age! 91-92 pts. at the moment

2015 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Reihburg R2 Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
93 points
Again: tasted side by side with its "little brother", the 2015 Reihburg without "r2".
This one performed a little bit better. The nose and the palate were more open, the aromas more pronounced. Red berries, especially cherries dominate the palate. The oak is still prominent here.
The same here: it will need at least another 5 years to develope all its tertiary aromas and more complexity!

Flight 3 - Reihburg 2010 & 2012 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
93 points
2012 is a good vintage for Burgenland-reds, especially for the "Eisenberg". This bottle showed very well developed on the nose. The palate is fresh, light to mid-weighted and shows floral aromas paired with red fruits. Will certainly need another 5 years to develope even more tertiary elements for complexity but is in a nice spot right now. Drink with air or keep for another 5 years in the cellar!

2010 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
94 points
This was the surprise of the evening! 2010 is a very underestimated vintage, the notes on this one haven't been the best, especially from the professional reviewers. But this bottle showed great today! Very open on the nose and on the palate. Black pepper is the first impression! Complex, tertiary elements paired with red fruits. Salty minerality that's so typical for the "Eisenberg", especially Reihburg. Very long! Nothing to complain about here! Will stay at peak easily for the next years

2012 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Reihburg R2 Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
93 points
Tasted side by side with its "little brother", the 2012 Reihburg without "r2".
This one is 12 months longer in barrel, 36 months in total. Indeed, there is a difference between the two tasted 2012's in the glass. This one is more powerful, the palate is mid-weighted and the aromas are more pronounced. But it is just different to the "normal" 2012, not necessarily better. It depends on your palate, if you prefer the lighter or the heavier version. The same here: it will need at least another 5 years to develope all its tertiary aromas and more complexity! 93+

Flight 4 - Reihburg 2009 & 2011 (2 notes)

Red
2011 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
92 points
Purple red color, very dense. No signs of ageing. Regarding the notes here on CT, the wine might be in a dumb phase. The nose is shy, with dark berries and a little bit of wood. Same on the palate. It promises much, but it's not the best time to open a bottle at the moment IMHO. 2011 should be a great vintage in a few years, so: wait! René Gabriel gave this 20 pts. For me: not in this phase! 91-92

2009 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
93 points
Purple red color, no signs of ageing. On the nose there are red fruits paired with some tertiary notes of wet earth and wood. Same on the mid-weight-palate - there is also some salty minerality. At the beginning of its drinking window! Ends very long. Promise for the future. 93+

Flight 5 - Reihburg 2005 & 2007 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
92 points
From Magnum:
Deep red color color, young impression. Fresh aromas of red berries on the nose. Medium body. Palate: Red berries and a lot of acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Typical minerality / saltiness, easy to drink - the end is long! Very young for the age, especially from Magnum. Underestimated vintage, long life ahead...92++

2005 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Ried Reihburg Austria, Burgenland, Südburgenland
91 points
From 2 different Magnums:
Deep ruby red color, no signs of ageing. Fresh nose of red berries, pronounced acidity on the palate, the "sharpest" of the whole vertical. Uwe Schiefer says, it was a very difficult vintage, wet and not very warm. I was impressed by the freshness and the young expression of this one.

Flight 6 - Finale - Weißer Schiefer "s" (1 note)

White
2019 Schiefer Weißer Schiefer "s" Burgenland Austria, Burgenland
94 points
From Magnum!
This was the final bottle, "framing" a Reihburg verticale of Uwe Schiefer.
Burgundy-styled white from the Eisenberg. Fresh impression of flowers, celery. Salty minerality on the palate, again it's more like a Meursault, than a typical Burgenland-white! The oak might need some more time to integrate! Will stay at this level at least for the next 5-10 years and may even have potential to improve! Give it plenty of air or hold in cellar! 93-94 pts
