Introduction

A range of various italian labels brought in for the fair by Luca and Rossano.

Flight 1 - Italian Wine Dinner @ Romanee's Kitchen (9 notes)

White
2007 Broglia Gavi La Meirana Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
80 points
Quite tight nose but managed to get some white flowers covered by lifted mineral citrus and almost some peppery spices irritating the nose at the end.Almost like a lifted cool climate viognier but not so as intense.Gentle tamed acidity of white starfruits and a squeeze of orange essence mixed with some lemons. Tasted much better with some food.
White
2006 Broglia Gavi Villa Broglia Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
83 points
Very light colour wiith a greenish tinge. Nicer more expressive nose than the le meirana. Whiffs of burgundian "ass"ness with some funky sweat smells! The nose got progressively more honeysuckle in the glass. A warm mouthfeel of sun-tanned grapefruit citrus notes with minerality lining. Quite pearish sweet but slight bitter pith surfaces nearer to the end. Taste almost like a chablis but on the finish is more citrus and mineral which gives it away.
Rosé
2007 Tenute Sella Coste della Sesia Majoli Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Coste della Sesia
80 points
A serious rose that is serious right from the start on the nose. Rose petals with strawberry notes and hints of arabian spices. Also reminded me of cough mixture poured over cotton candy. In fact, the nose smelt like a red tempranillo. Good aci lining over a good body of sour cherries. The worrying factor about this wine is if there is enough fruit for the acidity present.
Red
2007 Tenuta dei Re Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato Selezione Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato, Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato
83 points
After last year's first encounter with Ruche, I have been wanting to try some more. Am glad I finally did. Medium red. Lovely nose with some spices and very perfumed oils ...throw in some lacquer. Resembles a leafy green bordeaux but this was mnore seductive at the start with some light morello cherries. However, the finish is not as memorable. This is like meeting someone at the club but realised the next morning that its just not as good as you thought it was.
Red
2003 Tenute Sella Lessona Omaggio a Quintino Sella Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Lessona
87 points
Aged brownish tinge. This has cherries laced with mocha notes with a bit of nail varnish. Extremely sexy like a pinot. Beautifully floral strawberries with slightly spicy punctuations. The strawberry sweetness teases on the palate at first and slowly settles nicely into the palate with touches of tree bark. More caramel coffee notes surfaces in the glass after a while.
Red
2004 Gulfi Etna Reseca Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
86 points
Purple. Burnt caramel and dessicated coconut come on the frontal nasal attack followed by layered aromas of lower tone blackforest cake, dark violets, blackberries and dark choc. The nose reminds me of a good aussie shiraz. However, the difference with aussie shirazes is the clean acidity of blackberries that make it a lively and tasty effort without the alc burn. Very fresh, young and lovely on the palate with a brambly finish.
Red
2005 Sdricca di Manzano Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
85 points
Deep dark purple. Smoky blackberries lightly stewed in black soy sauce and scents of nail varnish. Blackberries and black cherries provide the fruit and nice light acidity. Lively effort and might I say just on the razor's edge with the alc. Definitely not brutish but also definitely no lady... this is a ladyboy.
Red
2004 Gulfi Sicilia Neromaccarj Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
82 points
Very new worldish. This has dark violets, burnt fruit pie, burnt caramel, sweet popcorn aromas. Very forward on the palate with dark berries and black fruits with a lot of dessicated coconut and coffee mocha finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Sdricca di Manzano Friuli Colli Orientali Friulano Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali
80 points
Golden sultanas and some apricots but not enough acidity. Rather tamed effort.

Flight 2 - Other Italian Labels tasted at the Fair (5 notes)

White
2007 Broglia Gavi Villa Broglia Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
83 points
Lovely fresh nose comprising citrus, pears, bready aromas framed by some nuttiness. Very fresh and nice spritely acidity with some limey minerality and rounding off by just a touch of bitter lime pith.
Red
2003 Tenute Sella Bramaterra I Porfidi Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Bramaterra
83 points
Muskyt leathery smelliness on the nose which I like. Good hardy substantial cherry fruits that have quite a bit of weight. Tannic but has potential to develop into a beauty.
Red
2004 Tenute Sella Lessona San Sebastiano allo Zoppo Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Lessona
84 points
Lightish red with a pinkish hue. Spicy berries with a kind of herb like mintyness peppered iwth some cigarette ash. Dry cherries with nuances of woodsticks and chinese medicine. This is really quite pinot noirish on intensity.
Red
2004 Gulfi Sicilia Nerosanlorè Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
83 points
Dark soy sauce and dark fruits with some nail varnish and smokiness. Interestingly, this has salty caramel on the palate and finishes salty too.
Red
2004 Gulfi Sicilia Nerojbleo Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
83 points
A bit of dark soy sauce, a bit of burnt rubber and a bit of dessicated coconut on the nose. Black ripe fruit sweetness come to the fore and last till the mid palate but became progresssively salty to the end that slowly evolved to show more dark mocha and prunish flavours.
