Introduction

An annual event to try the new releases as well as some older bottlings

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jansz Wine Company Premium Cuvée Brut Australia, Tasmania

Nice little bubbly. Clean expression of a sparkler with crisp green apple, citrus zest, and great acidity. Simple, refreshing, does what it needs to.

White
2007 Henschke Riesling Julius Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
80 points
I've never liked too much Aussie Riesling and this one in particular. Just not my style. Loads and loads of petroleum and slatey minerality. THe palate is crisp, clean, simple.
White
2007 Henschke Sauvignon Blanc Coralinga Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lenswood
82 points
Aromatics are lacking quite a bit. The palate is light-medium bodied. More like Sancerre than NZ in style. Clean with a grassy, herbal streak. Lemon zest, medium acid. Not too much going on.
White
2006 Heggies Vineyard Chardonnay Single Estate Reserve Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
90 points
Even though it's not the style Chard I enjoy, this is one huge rich Chard. Big toasty vanilla and spicy oak with creamy pear and yellow apple on nose. Mouthfull of rich, creamy yellow apple, and grilled asian pear. Finishes with some toasty, spicy oak and moderate acidity. Would please most.
Sidenote: past experiences with this wine only include some older vintages. I think this might take some time for the oak to integrate. Kind of like a young Meursault.

Red
2006 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir The Great Gorge New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
90 points
Had the '05 and was less than impressed, particularly with the regular bottling being phenomenal. This is a huge step up. Nice spicy nose with raspberry jam and strawberries. Very fruit forward palate, almost jammy as well. Ripe red berries, medium-high acidity, and more baking spices. Clean finish.
Red
2006 Henschke Henry's Seven Australia, South Australia, Barossa
91 points
Always one of my favs from Henschke. The grenache dominates allowing ripe strawberries, jammy red berries. The palate offers a little more. THe grenache still holds a ripe red fruit core, plum and berries. The shiraz adds a touch of spice and some texture. Finishes with nice acid and all around a great bottle.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2002 Henschke Cyril Henschke Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
92 points
At first I didn't know how to perceive this one. The nose isn't all that pleasant. Vegetal notes of bell pepper, herbs, and almost underripe tomato. As it opens, more red spicy fruits come out. ANyway, the palate holds quite a different quality. Velvety and rich with elegant red plum, cherry fruit. Starting to take on a slight earthy tone as well. Seamless finish. Hints of tobacco as well. 90-92
Red
2004 Vasse Felix Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
90 points
I'm not convinced that I would have guessed Cabernet. Spicy, jammy blackberries and plums. Hints of spicy oak, toast, and berries. Mild tannin structure and rather high acidity. Not my favorite, but definiteliy a quality wine.
Red
2004 Yalumba The Signature Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
92 points
Always one of my favorite Aussie standbys, although it's starting to get pricey. Nice aromatics of spice, eucalyptus, and cassis. Starts off a bit jammy and spicy. Brigh red plum and berries. Finishes with some power and more black fruits, still some spice, and moderate acidity. Good juice.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2002 Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon The Benbournie Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
94 points
Oh yeah. This tasting is getting better and better. First time with this label. Very powerful aromatics with cassis dominating along with tosty oak, coconut, nuts, and vanilla. Rich, yet elegant and velvety. Black cherry, creme de cassis, and dried herbs. Very mild tannins onthe finish with clean acid. Fantastic bottle.
Red
2002 Yalumba The Reserve Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
After having the regular Signature, and loving it, this was a let down. Dried red berries, tons of alcohol and spice on palate. Not too much stuffing on the palate. SImple red berries, a bit jammy, spices, and again a dollop of alcohol. Not my fav.
Red
2005 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
94 points
Wow. Completely different from previous experiences both with this bottling, and Henschke all around. Huge, heady nose. Big smokey bacon fat, toasted vanilla and spicy oak, creme de cassis and blackberry jam. Rich mouthfull of smokey fruit. Big black berries, creamy currants and cedar. This is a big boy. Tannins are mild, acidity is great. This is a keeper

Red
2004 Yalumba Shiraz The Octavius Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
I've always enjoyed this one as well, however this didn't deliver as anticipated. Jammy raspberries, spice, and eucalyptus on nose. The palate isn't as rich or concentrated as ddesired. Spicy red berry fruit, tobacco, and tea leaves. Finishes jammy and hot.
Red
2004 Henschke Shiraz Hill of Grace Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
92 points
After having the '05 Mt Edelstone, this one has a lot to live up to. Rather elegant to my surprise. Complex nose and palate of baking spices, vanilla, eucalyptus, and tea leaves. A nice jammy blackberry core with some mild tannins and very balanced acidity. I don't think throwing this towards the end of the tasting did it justice, but I can see where it is going. I just can't believe the prices.
Red
2005 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
96 points
Haha. Great way to end this tasting. Just as I remembered. Like liquid blueberry pie. It is rich and seamless, yet elegant with a great balance. Past vintages have been said to be able to last for decades, but why wait. Have had some older juice and it's just not the same. This is one hedonistic bottling of Aussie Shiraz.

Amazing consistency across the board. It's hard to get too excited about a $400 wholesale Sheeeraz!
