Flight 1 (14 notes)

White - Off-dry
1988 Schloss Schönborn Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheingau
Golden. Deep, low pitched peach aromas with some petrol. Off dry, weighty, and long if not exceedingly complex.
White - Off-dry
1999 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Light yellow. Great melange of spice, botrytis, and white peach on the nose. Off dry, light weight, full of apple, great acidity, and long finish. Such perfect balance and weight here that it was hard to spit this one-just breathtaking Spatlese, and probably my second favorite wine in this tasting. Its beauty and delicacy were particularly striking as it followed a Rheingau wine.
White - Off-dry
1999 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 165 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Pale. Subtle aromatics with some early secondary notes. Light with enough acidity to dance, but lacking in flavor interest.
White - Off-dry
1999 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Moderately deep yellow. Complex nose with mint, apple, and citrus. Relatively full bodied and sweet, could use more acid. Better on the nose than the palate, and not close in quality to the older JJ Auslese later in the series.
White - Off-dry
1999 Grans-Fassian Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Fairly dark yellow. Honey and spice. Apple fruit, full and round for a Mosel Auslese but no sense of minerality, and an unimpressive finish. Disappointing after very promising aromatics.
White - Off-dry
1999 Hans Lang Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Rheingau
Heavy botrytis and peach on the nose. Heavier style with cyanic bitterness at the end which was appealing in cutting through the weight of the wine. Pretty tasty, I have to admit, despite my general bias against this region.
White - Off-dry
1998 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Nahe
Medium yellow. Pungent high tones and botrytis here. Medium weight with tangerine and a mysterious lower toned flavor element that I cannot describe. Very good.
White - Off-dry
1995 Schloss Saarstein Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Golden, actually advanced looking for its age. Tangy, honeyed nose. Apricot fruit and BA level sweetness. Some bitterness on the finish. Not impressive, too rich and concentrated for its own good.
White - Off-dry
1994 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #8 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Pale with some green. Apple orchard nose with the faintest hint of petrol. Magically light, off dry with bright apple and orange peel fruit. Probably the most mineral wine in the line up. Fabulous, refreshing, and just on the cusp of maturity. One of today's top 3 wines for me.
White - Off-dry
1983 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Healthy yellow color for age. Subtle, laid back nose. Rich for the Saar, but the fruit and sweetness are subdued. Clearly mature. Not fading in the least, but not terribly interesting either.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Franz Kuhn Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Rheingau
Deep amber. This is all molasses, honey, and burnt sugar-you get the idea. Good brightness due to excellent acidity, but I'd prefer less syrup and more fruit.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Reichsrat Von Buhl Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Pfalz
Golden color but not as dark as the Kuhn BA. Piercing high tones from VA. This retains its apply fruit and is not nearly as viscous as the prior wine. Least enjoyable part is the finish, which comes across as disjointed.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 August E. Anheuser Kreuznacher Brückes Riesling Eiswein Germany, Nahe
Beautiful golden hue. Intense apple fruit, moderate sweetness. Absolutely dynamic interplay between sappy texture and electric acidity which serves to amplify the fruit. Amazing cut and length, thrilling balance. This could go on for decades more! Without question, the wine of the tasting and a monument to the greatness of German Riesling.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1971 Weingut Gortz Kreuznacher Bosenheimer Hinterhaus Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Nahe
Deep tint of orange and brown. This was like an orange/chocolate liqueur. Its nuttiness reminded me of a Pedro Jimenez sherry or a tawny port, and it just seemed heavy and dull without any of the lightness or tension of the extraordinary Anheuser Eiswein that came before it. Fans of bigger dessert wines would no doubt like this much more than I did.
